That would work for me. I think it's a big improvement and may help inspire other, good updating choices. It would also make the entry much more appealing from the outside, as well.

Before you replace a front door with a large opening with a smaller door, be certain that you have another door in the home that you can move large pieces of furniture into/out of the home. I think the modern door would work, style-wise, but make sure you think practically, too.

Or consider a double door since you are removing so much already.

Is the grille on your existing front porch a simple screen door or a security door? Will you be adding anything like that to a new door?

If you post a pic of the whole house perhaps someone can mock up the new door for you. Easiest way to "see" if it really works. Fwiw, the modern door you posted looks "transitional" with the wood finish. If it were painted matte orange, for example, it would lean too modern to work with a house with more classic bones.

I need to see the whole exterior of the house. I love double doors for entry they are not only nice to look at but really functional too. The entry door is really the first impression of your home so please post some pics of the house.

Thank you all so much! Here is a picture of the whole front of the house (which needs a ton of work, especially the ugly wood wall and slats). Jinx, thank you so much for the mock up! That helps! We are replacing it with the same size door (36”) because we can’t go any wider. The header above the door supports the roofline and we can’t afford to remove it and replace it with a steel header.

Does that look right with the rest of the entry/ house? I’m trying to add a picture of what the rest of the house looks like when you walk in the front door but it’s not letting me add more pics for some reason.

The door works better with the outside of the house than the current doors. Personally I would swap out all those 6 panel doors for a simpler door- the architecture of the house is so modern and those are very traditional. I would also paint the trim so the floors are the star

Thanks so much Hallet & Co. I was thinking the same that the door would look better from the outside. It sounds crazy but we hadn’t even though of swapping out the other doors, but I like that suggestion. For the other interior doors, would you recommend the same style door as the front door, just without the glass or would you recommend a plain slab door? Also, when you say paint the trim so the floors are the star, what do you suggest?

Are the side windows remaining the same?

I would do plain slab doors, simple casings, all painted white. The beams on the ceiling and the staircase could stay natural. And remove the popcorn ;)

Stax, you can't really see the front door from the street...at least not right now because the steel security door is there and it masks everything. Once that is gone and we have the new concrete porch/walkway put in, I think it may be slightly more noticeable.

Slandersonwdc, we are removing the stained glass windows and installing wide, full light windows on either side of the door.

Also think about replacing the interior doors with something besides slab. We have these simple doors in our modern home...they weren't expensive and they have a bit more interest than a simple slab:
