water lily/plant shelf/other plant questions
Comments (6)Hi backyardmama, Yes, I have pickerel. I put it on one of those black milk crates and it does great. I have it in something like a 3 gallon pot, and I have to thin it every year. Its pretty aggressive. I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable about the various skimmers and filters. I've always just used a little box filter around my pumps. That's too bad that your's was missing those pieces. One filter box I bought once was missing a part too. Somebody in quality control is asleep on the job! Just be sure if you try to fix it yourself, that you don't obstruct any water flow, where the correct missing piece was supposed to go. I forget......why do you need to change your pond to a stocktank? I've actually never had anything other than preforms and stocktanks. I'd be so afraid of punctures! One thing I did to the stocktank, once I got it home, was to tighten up that drain plug as tight as possible, and then caulk around it too. Then let the caulk sit about day, to dry, and then it goes in the ground. oops....can't remember if your putting your's inground or above ground. If it above ground, you can just keep your eye on the drain plug, and watch for leaking. I've found that they leak a little to start with, then stop. Good luck, and you'll have to post some pics when it gets going!...See MoreClump Shots Plus A Few Other Plants
Comments (13)These pictures are just delightful. I love clump shots because I really feel that daylilies look their prettiest when blooming all together.....even plain-looking daylilies have a special 'glow' about them when viewed as a clump blooming away in the garden. It's easy to love pretty faces but the figure is important too....LOL. You have some very pretty ones here. I like that clump shot of the yellow NOID. (I have a couple yellow NOIDs myself and mine are fragrant too so I wonder if yellows tend to be more fragrant?). I like the form of your yellow too. Then of course Chance Encounter is always so photogenic and just the loveliest shade of pink so who could resist that one? And lucky you to have that Carpenter seedling 'Ruby'! That is so eye-catching and quite frankly I'm jealous because it's not something I can ever order...boohoo. The others are lovely and so enjoyable to see. I'm glad to see Green Mystique because I planted one last fall and haven't seen it in person yet. Celeste...See MoreHow long can I wait to plant these lilies, plus planting question
Comments (1)linnea56, this fall I dug up three flower beds that were overgrown with grass and weeds and am in the process of redesigning them. I took all the various lilies from two beds and replanted in a third bed. I still have about 30 bulbs to plant and basically I've got them sitting in some slightly moist vermiculite. I've planted lilies where the top 2" of soil was frozen and they made it through our winters just fine, of course they were Asiatics. I have moved one group of lilies from one spot and replaced them with other lilies in the same spot, not problem. I don't use and kind of fertilizer when I plant bulbs in the fall although I can't see it hurting if you add some bone meal. I've also got some Canna lilies I have to dig up so will probably plant my Asiatics in their place. Hope this helps. Stan...See MoreSome of my echinacea plants aren't looking too hot
Comments (2)Well, the one plant is all blackened and withered, looks like it got torched with a flame thrower...and the plant next to it looks pretty good. I'm wondering if the one didn't get enough water...I'm having a hard time watering them and can't always water every one. Do they hate too much water or not enough? I figured they were drought tolerant. They aren't sitting in a boggy place, but we did have an incredibly wet early summer, and now it's back to drought time....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
