transplanting can slow down squash, but I grow several every year and always transplant. Even my giant pumpkins get transplanted after it is 2 feet tall and wide. Transplant carefully and you should have no problem. It looks to me like maybe too cold and too wet. ? Where are you located? I am on the coast of British Columbia and this (last week of May or first week of June) is when I set my plants to ground from the green house. Don't fertilize until they show growth. If you can put a cover over them that will help to warm them up but DON"T burn them!. You need root growth in June. Taking off the first few flowers will let leaves and roots develop. Leaves and roots are what feed the fruit.

digger is close ... formerly.. improperly called the august lily ... they bloom in mid august up here in z5 .... many hosta will not bloom until they achieve some sense of root maturity .... sometimes taking a few years to really get the show going... here in MI ... we had an extremely cold may .. i dont know how that will affect plantiginea and its flowering.. or the timing of such ... up here.. plantiginea is a full sun hosta ... as with most flowering plants.. too much shade will impact how well it blooms .... 6 inch .. pure white [rare in hosta] gardenia scented flowers .... which open in the evening ..... its genes are the mother of all fragrant hosta ... ken

Truscifi, First Happy Birthday tomorrow. Mine was today. I live in Lake county and I have a raised garden. I have cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and eggplant. I water for an hour a day at about 7am. My vegetables have the sun from noon till it goes down. My cucumbers got blooms this sunday. I planted on March 19th, started some of everything a couple weeks in the house except cucumbers. Hope yours start to grow soon.

Thanks all for your comments. If I am still overwatering, then here's the rub: we share the watering system with the neighbors in the back (we live in a 2 on a lot condo), so whatever adjustments I make have to be good enough for them, too. Of course the wife, who has done most of the planting, admits she knows less even than me, so if it IS overwatering, maybe it's been too much for her too. I'll have to have a conversation with her. Our sprinklers run for 15 minutes every other morning at 4 a.m. There is a segment that waters the lawn, and a segment that waters the beds- I fear I cannot turn one off without turning the other off, and our lawn kind of needs more watering (at least it has looked that way!) The soil was sandy to start, but I did a good job of getting compost in there (maybe I should have left it sandy!) and it is also mulched on top. Maybe I need to take up all the mulch? Oy- so many questions! I want to bring a master gardener to my house to figure it all out for me!! ; ) but then I'll never learn...sigh....! Anne
