Not sure of which Sabal you have (S. palmetto, minor, or another). Assuming it's the standard Florida Sabal (S. palmetto). You do realize that Sabals (even in the tropics) are notoriously SLOW--ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUNG (growth seems to pick up once they are more mature). There are relatively faster growing Sabals. I find S. texana to be a much more robust plant (sorry Florida). Mine has maxed out in the largest container I have.--A wonderful species! (Sabal louisiana is also faster growing--compared to 'palmetto'.) A more tropical species, S. mauritiiformis is also relatively fast and attractive (but hard to find.) I got a little bored with the slow growth of my containerized S. palmetto so I planted it in the ground (my first Sabal experiment). If you think S. palmetto is slow try growing S. minor. I got so bored with this one I threw it into the compost pile!

Tessa, perennial gardening requires a bit more than just planting things in dirt. That you've got a garden plan is good news. The next question is, did you consider your garden before you created the plan? Do you know where there's full sun/part sun/part shade/full shade? Do you know what type of soil you have? Mine is slightly acidic sandy loam so my garden plan took that into account when I selected perennials I wanted to grow. I also did a shade study on June 21, the summer solstice, so I'd know how much sun each area of my property received since I garden on an acre of land. That allowed me to plant a wider variety of perennials since many need part sun or part shade or full shade. I knew I had healthy soil--my parents practiced organic gardening (i.e., no chemicals) for 50 years before I moved here. Soil and moisture are huge factors in how successful a garden will be. You may not have as much area in which to garden as do I but don't give up and short-change yourself. Another tip: tease out the roots of perennials in pots before you set them in the ground. Plants will sometimes start growing roots in circles inside pots when they'd really prefer sending roots downward into soil. I lost an expensive perennial a few years back when I failed to tease out its roots so it could grow. Now I always tease the roots of things after I take them out of their pots. From tomatoville forum...this was discussed.... "It's from his book The New Organic Grower which was first published some years ago, but contains a wealth of excellent information. Here's the onion quote: The concept of the multiplant block is based on spatial rather than linear plant distance in the field. For example, say the average ideal in onion spacing is one plant every 3 inches in rows spaced 12 inches apart. Mutiplants aim at an equivalent spacing of four or five onions per square foot. The difference is that all four onions are started together in one block and grow together until harvest....The onions grow normally in the clump, gently pushing each other aside, attaining a nice round bulb shape and good size. "blocks" in this context are soil blocks - compressed soil used instead of pots for seed starting through transplant. He also plants scallions 12 per block and harvests them as a bunch. I like that idea, too. There's time savings on seed starting, transplanting, harvesting and, especially, weeding, since you can easily cultivate between the widely spaced clumps." These are planted in blocks, with appropriate spacing and he transplants the entire block at once..they still are spaced appropriately...he still spaces them...just plants entire tray at once...stir has hers planted right on top of each other..I say again..they will never size up that way..she either needs to thin them or dig and replant them spaced farther apart.

Those are relatively warm temps.......did these bulbs receive proper chilling? That can affect their growth if insufficient time was provided for them to develop a proper root structure before it got warm. They also look like they are in containers and not planted very deeply. I'm not sure how much that might affect development but it is a consideration. btw, 'daffodil' is just a common name for some forms of narcissus. But they are ALL narcissus :-))
