I think a dark floor (rug) and walls will create a cave. I used Farrow & Ball Bone with a dark rug in a north facing room.

I would look at a neutral greige with green undertones.

The SW visualizer is making all the colors look blue green, not exactly sure why. The wall color below is supposed to be Prairie Grass but it looks pretty much the same as Hardware at this moment - something must be stuck in the program.

This is a tough room, with the colors of flooring, rug and furniture. What about a warm yellow as it will connect all the components and will be a good color for a north facing room.

Whatever color you decide on, add complementary cushions.

I'm curious when the room is used most of the time: day or night?

Thank you all for your suggestions!! The floor will actually be changed too. We are going with red oak in a natural finish, so it won't be orange like it is in this photo. As for when the room is used, it's more of a formal living room and I usually only go in there during the day. We use the downstairs family room more because that's where the TV is etc.

Hmm, I wouldn’t do the walls dark blue just because you have a red rug. Sometimes it’s more about what else you have in the room such as art , accessories land furniture pieces that complement the rug. I have some red rugs in my home also and my walls are a light cream.

Paint robin's egg blue or other blue needs blue scattered around. An idea:

Thanks everyone! Sounds like a light color is the way to go. Here's a photo I took of the room. Of course, it's in shambles at the moment with furniture piled up in there because of the kitchen renovation in the next room. It gives you an idea of how much light comes in when the curtains are open and when the recessed lights are on. The kitchen is painted BM Edgecomb Gray. Any ideas for a light neutral color that would flow with the Edgecomb Gray? When you're standing in the kitchen you can see the living room and vice versa. I would like for them to flow but they don't necessarily have to be the same color, unless you think Edgecomb works in here. I really appreciate all your suggestions!

I think EG has enough warmth to carry into this room as well. While I love Camouflage I think it is too green fo here.

Beautiful windows could be shown off without the old curtains and the newly refinished flooring will be lighter. Try taking a photo of sofa and chair cushions next to your Edgecomb Gray paint in the other room. Turn on all the lights first and include a piece of white paper to help the camera color balance.

It’s hard to tell what furniture I’d going to be in this room. Only you can determine if EG will look good with your current furnishings of course. It’s almost impossible for any of us to get an accurate read how any color will look in your space.

If you do put drapes back up on these windows I would offset them as to allow as much light as possible into the room!

Thanks! The curtains are always opened to let more light in. The only reason they were closed in that first photo was because we hadn't moved in yet. The curtains have to stay. I bought the fabric in Greece and they are custom made.

I took the arm cover off the chair and I put that and the curtains up against the Samplize sample of EG that I have here. It looks like it could work, but I'll have to go upstairs into that room after the workers leave and look at it in there. I know it's hard for you guys to give me completely accurate advice without seeing it in person, but I do appreciate all of your feedback! It might be worth looking at some more creamy colors to compare and see what looks best before deciding.

With new flooring, you might consider not using the rug -- just show off the new flooring, at least for the summer -- and then let the rug warm the room in winter .

If both the curtains and the rug "must" stay for the foreseeable future, then make the room wall color coordinate with both the rug and the curtains. Then, later, choose any new sofa or other furniture to also coordinate with what must stay. The only thing that I believe might work well with ALL the colors you now have is a neutral tan -- a pale brown without any pink or yellow hue.

But then, I'm not a decorating pro.

Kensington blue is a gorgeous color. I’m not sure you would like a blue with north facing influences. North light is blue, gray and often cold.

No need to match the colors in the rug. Actually, the rug may how better with a darker green.

Suezbell - I have done that in the past with the rug, but given my back problems, I try not to move furniture and rugs too often, lol.

I thought of how blue might look in a north facing room but I saw this inspiration photo online with a deep red rug and navy walls and I just loved how bold it looked. I think they used Hale Navy though. I don't think I'd be willing to go that dark, which is why I considered Kensington!

Benjamin Moore’s Off-White Collection of 140 whites is arranged by hue; select a cool (with blue, gray or green tones) or a warm white (with red, orange or yellow tones). When using your favorite paint brand, check the fan deck for the white in each color range to see the underlying hue for each option (Benjamin Moore provides this info for its OC White Collection).

Edgecomb Gray is just barely into the taupe zone where it can pick up pink purple undertones. This is more likely in a northern facing room (adding a bit more blue to the orange/gray color). It will also be more likely to pick up some pink/purple next to gold tones. (Purple and Yellow are complements, so they enhance each other.

I would go with something more green than Edgecomb.

I like bringing item [sample of it] to paint store, locate its basic match. Then use their info / paint fan just to see what variations might be, whether lighter, muted....
