A Red Dining Room...Is It Right For Your Home?
I adore a beautiful, red dining room. If there’s any room in the home that just feels right painted red, it would have to be the dining room where we gather with our friends and family to nourish not only our bodies but our hearts, as well.
A red dining room is not for the faint of heart, though. It’s bold, dramatic and commands your attention making a beautiful statement in a home's décor. Red isn’t "safe" like beige or white. No, it requires a little bit of commitment since it isn’t easily dismissed when a new, Johnnie-come-lately color comes to town. Changing red walls to almost any other color, unless of course it’s an even darker color, is typically going to require a few coats of primer and some elbow grease before the new wall color can be applied.
If you’ve been toying with painting your dining room walls red…or for that matter, any bold, dramatic color…here are some tips and wonderful rooms to help you decide if red is the right choice for your home.

If a true red isn't quite to your liking, consider a warm, cinnamon red as shown here. The red drapes add to the dramatic feel of this beautiful room.
Do you have a crystal chandelier that has a tendency to blend right into the surroundings? Showcase its beauty against gorgeous red walls.
Red walls also create a perfect backdrop for mirrors like the Venetian style mirror in this room.
If you're worried about red overwhelming your room, consider installing a chair rail and painting bright white or a soft white beneath. Those red walls won't seem near as bold once you start adding back your paintings and other wall decor.
Install your wainscoting up nice and high and you'll still get that nice contrast with your chandelier while keeping the room light and airy.
Consider softening your red walls with a custom wall treatment. You will still get the same warmth and richness of red walls...but the walls will have a softer, more velvety feel.
Even though this dining room is a bit smaller than the others we've seen, red works well due to the openness of the room and the cathedral ceiling.
When you first paint your walls red, it can feel...well, really red! Add a big beautiful mirror, some large art pieces and well placed lighting and your room will feel balanced and just right.
If your dining room and living area are open to each other, consider carrying your red paint color all the way into the living area, as well. The large windows and white trim keep this space feeling open and bright.
Can you paint your dining room red if you have a really open interior? You sure can. Just look for a natural "stopping" point for the red. It's best if the adjoining wall color is a color that compliments the red paint color you've chosen.
Surprise! Didn't expect to see this room in an Ideabook about red dining rooms, did you? I couldn't resist including it because it delivers as much impact and passion as the red rooms we've been viewing. And WOW, look at that gorgeous chandelier contrasting against those rich, dramatic walls. Almost takes your breath away, doesn't it?
Fall is here, winter is on it's way. Consider warming up your dining room this year with beautiful red walls. Don't be afraid...it's just paint and your holiday china will shine in your new red dining room.

Red is such a wonderful choice for this gorgeous room because the bold color draws even more attention to its amazing architectural features.
