How do I navigate the light switch above my hallway console?

Here is a photo of my entry hall to the left of front door. The light switch is not ideally placed. I would ideally love a mirror or similar above the console. Also any ideas on how to fill the entire wall? A blank space has always been my dream now I have no idea what to do with it!! I’m not keen on the idea of coat or key hooks

Only on Houzz can a fifty dollar "problem" become an exercise in brain twisting. Or money better spent elsewhere. Like a receptacle for a lamp and a stair runner that isn't builder beige.

I would move the console over so it is between the light switches and the radiator, then it will be no problem to have a nice mirror over it. A bigger plant maybe in the corner by the window if needed once that is moved.

By the way, that nipple-like thing (between light and smoke alarm) was installed prior to when the light fixtures got replaced. It was installed by the management company that ran the building when it was a rental apartment complex. We replaced this company after the place became a condo building. Before this company was replaced, we had complained that the hallway lights were wired to the condo units rather than the Public breaker box. The company then sent an electrician to correct the problem and it was then that the nipple-like things appeared in certain hallway ceilings. In my part of the building, my hallway ceiling is the only one with this nipple-like thing. The first and second floor does not have one. Below is a photo of what's inside the thing.

There is a defective 3 way switch or like "bigbird 1" said, one of the travelers and the common are interchanged. If this lighting switch set up was working when you purchased the house, then it is pretty good bet that a switch went bad. If it never worked properly since you have opwned the house, it could be a bad switch or wired wrong. If you decide to try this repair yourself, be careful because not all manufacturers put the travelers (screws) in the same exact location on the switch. Some will have the travelers on the same side of the switch while others will have them across from each other. The good news is that most will mark on the body of the switch "Common" and that screw will be a different color than the other two. So look at your old switch and take the wire off the common screw (different color screw) put some tape on it as a marker and install it on the new switch common screw. Then transfer the other two wires. If it was wired correctly and you replaced the defective switch, it should work OK now. If it does not work right, then swap the common with one of the other wires and see if it works now. If it does not work right, then put the wires back the way they were (wire with the tape on the common screw) and add another new 3 way switch at the other end of the hall, using the same process. With all that being said, if there is more than one wire nut / splice in either of the two switch boxes, don't get involved with it, because you will only be going from bad to worse! Remember this rule of thumb... the first thing to do when you find yourself in a hole... is to stop digging! GOOD LUCK

Thanks a2gemini for your help. I would like to find a pendant for over the sink, but maybe just that one for the peninsula area. As per the island, we are considering a Modere-aire hood which will have lights (halogen I think). The hood look we are considering is posted below. However, the colour will likely be white and trim will be brushed steel (not the copper in the picture). Given this hood is large, perhaps we should do two pendants over the island? What do you and others think about the switch for the lights in the dining room? In other words when we leave the kitchen and go to the dining room, do you think we could have a switch on the back of the peninsula? How far away should the pots lights be from the wall? The i-joist are quite wide open with no plumbing above so we should not be too limited. Thanks! BTW our ceilings are only 8 feet, so the not at all like the image posted!! I really want a mirror in there since the hall is so narrow. That is going to be my hardest problem to solve. FWIW I would be able to see in a mirror over the middle of the table as my belly button comes just above the console (36" H) Any mirror I put in there would have to be short though...... some of them are just way too tall and wide. I took a tape measure and measured 39.5" H from the table top (from in middle of the table) to the bottom of the staircase. Knowing the stairwell infringes on the height and some of the width on the left side I was thinking a 30-32" circle or square shape would fit and still allow me to see myself. But a rectangle or quadrefoil shape (Which cuts off some of the sides) may look better. Any suggestions based on my measurements?

I need to shift the Decor but a quick look of your suggestion Cubby14 and I think it works. Perhaps a taller slimmer plant to the left and add decor to console. Thank you!

I like the console moved over there but not so sure about the plant. Can you take a picture of it without it? If it stays maybe you could set it on a small stool or stand to make it taller.

Find some tall vertical art or a mirror to hang ABOVE IT. A framed "over the door" mirror and skip the Over the door components. Hang it. It will give you the perfect proportion. Cheap

How about a big standing mirror for the space? Now you don't worry about the light switch as well as the blank space

Maybe I am not judging the size correctly, but (based on the door handle) it seems that your 'console' table is very low and small (like a bench). A table that is shallow, but taller and a bit wider might suit the space better.

It is also worth note that moving a light switch is fairly easy and shouldn’t be too expensive even with a pro. Point is - don’t let that dictate your choices. Don’t let yourself spend a ton of money working around it when moving it is an easy option too. Good luck. Lots of good ideas here already.

Might be the angle, but I would try centering it on that wall using the front edge of the bottom step.as the imaginary right boundary.
