The Fun & Not so Fun parts of Christmas Decorating!
Comments (19)Oak, I want to thank you for starting this thread. Not only has it been 'fun' to read, it has helped me tremendously! I just got all the Fall decor packed away yesterday, and was in shock how much I now have, and was wondering why it I suddenly needed more bins! Then Luvs made me realize I'd gotten so much Halloween this year, and it got packed where a lot of my Fall stuff was. Ackkkkk. So now I've had to use of my Xmas bins for Fall stuff. My DH happened to be here (shock, he didn't play golf Thanksgiving Day!) and asked me if I wanted him to go buy me more bins. Then he laughed and said he didn't know where in the world I could put them. I told him I'd worry about it when I go to take the Christmas down...NEXT YEAR. LOL. Anyway, I wasn't able to do anything last week, and had so much on my List that needed doing. Ao I threw a Pity Party and felt totally overwhelmed and wondered if I should even bother hauling out the Christmas stuff. It just seemed more than I could deal with right now. But you started this thread and I know that everyone has similar problems. The work of getting all the Christmas stuff out, then figuring where to put things, the unpleasant tasks of stringing lights and fluffing garlands which seem to take forever! The exhaustion, and pain, that accompanies trying to get everything done. And I know some of you have Fibro too, and some have bad backs, and other problems that make decorating difficult at times. So suddenly I knew I was surrounded by friends who are plugging away just as I must do. So I've perked up and began climbing that Christmas Mtn today. Thank you...all of you...for just being here when needed. I love you guys. hugs, Karen...See More*New Lamp(s)* New Console Table* still have time to return..(pic)
Comments (57)No wonder you are confused. My head was spinning after reading all of the opinions! I was following the original post, but this is my first look at your follow-up. I agree with the others about finding another shade for first lamp if you decide to use it. The present shade is too short and it is the wrong style. My suggestion would be to take the lamp into a lighting store that sells shades. There you will have some expert advice as well as the option to "try on" various shades, much in the same way that you would try on clothes to determine the most flattering fit and combination. Think of the gas you will save! These are some guidelines for shades that I have found useful: 1. Match the base  think size, shape, style, color. Your goal is to match the mood of the base. 2. Compliment the base  the shade should make the base look better without competing with for attention (like that patterned shade on the metal lamp) 3. Hide the switch  the shade should just barely cover the switch (usually the height of harp + ½ inch). Try different sized harps, or add a shade riser to fine-tune. 4. Sizing Rules of Thumb: (1) Shade height should be about ¾ the height of the base (2) Bottom of shade should be wider than widest part of the base. (3) Shade width should be approximately equal the height from bottom lamp base to the top of the lamp stem, (just below the socket cap) I like both lamps. I think either one will be beautiful, but I would not use both of them in that room. Rather than another ginger jar, it would be nice to use a different architectural form on the console. I like the console very much. I do not like the metal/glass (marble?) lamp with the patterned shade. I would look for gorgeous buffet lamps. I am thinking wooden with an antique gold finish (very simple, but elegant). These are high end lamps, but use as examples. If you want the console to appear more sophisticated, remove the dried flower wreath that is resting on the books below, and remove the wicker basket with the greens from the top of the console. Replace it with a grouping of three (the magic number) similar objects (candles, boxes, ceramics, etc.) of different height and proportion. Good luck and keep up the good work. I am amazed by your shopping energy and resourcefulness....See MoreHelp me Furnish & Decorate My Living Area &Dining Room of my new home
Comments (26)I love the clean, uncluttered look of your home and you've made some great furniture choices. My first thought, though, is that I would try to rework the sofa/sectional placement. It really is unwelcoming looking to me to have the back where it is facing a wall, when it could be oriented to look into the room and out the windows. It seems like if it were placed in the corner under the stairs that it would feel open and invite you to come in and sit. I'd hate to be cooking in the kitchen and have the family or guests with their backs to me. If you are having a TV in another room close by, do you need one in that room, too? If, so placing a 70" unit will probably only work as you have it. But, to me, it's not going to look like a living room but more like a movie theater, which is fine if that's what you're going for. It seems like it won't be a cozy conversation area, though. I might actually flip the rooms and put the dining room where you have the sofa now. I was looking at lights used with dining rooms and ghost chairs and saw this, maybe would work in the living room? Kind of fun. don't know if it would look as good without the colored walls though. And I thought something like these were interesting to consider for over your table:...See MoreHow do I navigate the light switch above my hallway console?
Comments (15)It is also worth note that moving a light switch is fairly easy and shouldn’t be too expensive even with a pro. Point is - don’t let that dictate your choices. Don’t let yourself spend a ton of money working around it when moving it is an easy option too. Good luck. Lots of good ideas here already....See MoreZoe52
