tile vs vinyl plank in teen bathrooms?

We plant to re do two kids’ bathrooms. We don’t need super fancy, but right now they are dated and have some tile colors that we don’t love. One contractor suggested vinyl plank flooring with a wood look. Another completely dismissed that idea and insisted tile would be better. For what it’s worth, both are full baths, one with standalone shower/double sinks, one with tub/shower combo.

I have noticed the preference with LVP seems to be somewhat regional. In my area high end homes are built with wood look vinyl now. Personally I have teenagers and wouldn’t install tile on the floor in their bathroom, as much as I would love the opportunity to design a bathroom around some really great floor tile. There are really great vinyl options, and I want it to be as easy as possible for teenagers to clean themselves, no porous grout on the floor to worry about. If it was my own bathroom it would be different. Of course if YOU really want tile there are definitely options that are better than others as far maintenance, durability, and budget for kid bathrooms. If it’s a matter of stretching your budget, I wonder if the contractor is anticipating bringing in separate sub contractors instead of one tile person? I know the quote for my sister in a different part of the country to do LVP flooring was astronomical compared to the cost of labor where I am. The cost savings seem most significant when it comes to DIY vinyl floors.

Well tile and LVP are both pretty durable. In the end it all comes down to cost, your area, and if you plan on selling your home in the future. LVP is cheaper especially if you go the DIY route, which should be pretty easy to go. The only downside to LVP though is that unless its a lower priced home, it can be perceived as cheap and lacking in quality. Again as EvaElizabeth said it can vary from location to location but generally most higher-end locations expect to find real tile in the bathrooms and not LVP. Assuming your not selling in the future LVP would be the cheaper option and tile would be the more high-end option with more choices.

We are doing master bath remodel and previous owners had vinyl plank flooring laid over the concrete foundation-- the people who did the work said that if the baseboard is high enough (ours is about 3" of wood--not tile.. they said the vinyl plank was run to the baseboards and cut to fit then silicone caulk was used along that joint... So far have noticed no issues anyplace in house this was done--not just in bathroom... we are taking out all LVT in master suite and replacing it with 1 type of flooring for unified look after master bath is redone--since we can't get the type of flooring in there now--not made anymore-- they won't need to add a quarter round on top of the LVT... so as long as you are happy with how the LVT would look butting up to the ceramic tile baseboard--maybe you can do the same... IS the ceramic baseboard in good shape? Still tight?

You need a solid surface for your waterfall to sit on... and floating floors must be allowed to expand and contract- you can't place cabinets on top of it. So the safest bet is to cut the tile just in front of the waterfall and leave the tile underneath in place. You will need to leave a 1/4" gap (could be slightly smaller, check the manufactures instructions) between the new floating floor and the edge of the island, so you need to be able to live with the gap or install baseboard. I think a simple square baseboard that is about 3" high could look "ok" glued along the bottom of the waterfall, but certainly not ideal. Your best bet is to go with a wood look tile instead.

And so on. Tile is horrible on joints and feet LVP is much softer certainly not as expensive to install and when you are sick of it not nearly as expensive to remove.

I don’t agree that LVP is not a good choice for basements. We used it because we have a walk out that goes to a free access dog run with 3 big dogs and the other entry is to the pool so lots of traffic with wet feet, muddy feet and at the end of the day a quick mop and it looks like new 12 yrs later . Hardwood would have by now looked like garbage from dog nails and water left sitting. IMO you choose flooring to stand up to your lifestyle not because some imaginary buyer will like it better. We have always had floors that are not real wood because we will always have big dogs and no matter how careful you are they can do some real damage to wood floors.
