Custom window treatment not right - what are my rights?
Comments (6)I think she made a very bad call in design and should have told you what would be showing. If the cornice is rebuilt, I'd change the design since making it longer (vertically) may make it difficult for a tall person to exit without ducking. An easy, immediate fix is to lower the cornice until it covers the railing, but you'll have a gap between the top of the cornice and the ceiling. I'd do that first to check the final height for head clearance and if it's too low then building a taller cornice isn't going to solve the problem. If the order was for a cornice to the ceiling then she's at fault in design and owes you . Blaming you is not putting the customer first! IMO, she owes you either a new cornice (if lowering it doesn't work) or vertiglide. Remember that using an outside mount vertiglide is going to require a deeper cornice, so she'd probably end up having to replace both if she goes that route. "You wanting an inside mount" has NOTHING to do with it. She was in charge of measurements and should have known this would happen. If they mess up on measurements then they're responsible. That's why you let them come in and do all measuring. If you prefer an inside mount, then a cornice can be built to go over it. BTW, the cornice doesn't have to go all the way to the ceiling. It depends on where the bottom of it needs to start and the overall depth needed to balance the window treatment. If you want more feedback, post over in the discussions section.....see below. Comments (5)My windows are naked now, but I would say that I change them as often as I change my sheets :oP Ok maybe not that often, but I do like to have seasonal looks, and on occasion just start over with decor (I love change LOL) Personally I think this is just a good excuse to buy more fabric, but I like to pretend it's because I like to decorate seasonally......See MoreWould love to see some window treatment pictures & get advice!
Comments (26)Francoise47 - I LOVE Tinker's kitchen. Drool! Those look so nice and simple yet elegant in her kitchen but yes I agree about cleaning them. I don't think I'm willing to do that. I also don't find blinds to be all that user-friendly. Things always seem to go wrong with me and blinds! CEFreeman - I don't see the Lowe's link (?) but I can google it now that I know the location, thanks! I think a valance would block too much light, but the strip of horizontal wall color just above the windows acts sort of like a valance-of-sorts actually! The paint color is Benjamin Moore's Fieldstone a.k.a. Fieldstone gray. Thanks! Lake Girl - thanks for the positive feedback and sorry I didn't see (or don't remember) an old link in which you asked about the tile. I wanted something that was white and cheerful though had a little bit of gray and tan in it so I could warm up the coldness of the stainless countertop (and so I could have both warm or cool colors in the kitchen in general). Hence, calacatta. It was a PITA (although at times sorta fun) and here's what I did: I bought 12" x 12" pieces of calacatta marble from a local stone and tile business. I then called around and found a good fabricator to hone and cut the tile into 2x6" pieces. THEN I pulled out all pieces that were either too dark or busy or too plain white (although I did throw in the occasional plain white piece here and there to keep the backsplash from being too busy looking) and then I had what was left installed! OY! Not quite as easy as stopping by Lowe's, eh?! :: Funny thing was, when the guy was done installing the tile, there was almost no pieces (of the good stuff) left! So it turns out that I ordered the exact right amount since wasting the other pieces couldn't be helped. I can no longer remember the grout color but if you google my name along with the name gardenweb and type in something about grout color, it might pop up. I'm not crazy about the light gray color and wish I'd gone with white but oh well. I don't dislike it that much. I wonder if I could sell the left over pieces. I don't think anyone else would want gaudy pieces either though - especially in those less common dimensions. Thank you!...See MoreWindow treatments for a NON window treatment type girl
Comments (14)We are not window treatment people either, but have started to add some as we've reno'd/decorated a few of the rooms in our house; two bathrooms and our office. They really do help to finish off a room. That said, we're not covering our kitchen bow window, or the DR bow window, though I might consider something for the DR window at some point--just for the window panes themselves, not to cover the whole bow-unit. We used Hunter Douglas' Designer Screen Shades in the Roman Shade style (ours are mounted inside the frames becuase of our window style/frame depth). The shades are very clean-lined and range in sheerness. With the sheerer weaves/fabrics, you can see outside with them down and they allow a lot of light in....See MoreZakary Morton
