Woodworking Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with Island stain color

We are doing SW Coastal Plain (green) cabinets around the perimeter with Special Walnut stained island. Cabinets are maple. Originally, we were going for contrast between island and flooring (second photo for inspiration), but what we have here now is an almost match (the cabinet stain has a pinch more red than the floor). I love both separately, but not sure about them together. Should we go with it or pick something else? What other stain would you choose?

Sadly this looks like you were trying to match but missed. Why maple if you are trying for a dark stain- maple doesn't really like stain. Why not oak or walnut?

yeah, totally. We'd wanted a lighter flooring, but the options were limited. We're trying to keep within budget as much as possible which means choosing from the builder's selections (which is maple cabinets). The stain board is what they recommended to "go with" the floor. We're looking to contrast. Either lighter or darker. Thanks

So is it the black island you don't want, the dark countertop, or both? I wouldn't want the island the same as the window trim...Creamy would be better. If you go with black island, I saw a kitchen once with black cabinets and a gorgeous creamy gold colored counter (it was actually a kind of marble, but the right granite could do the same) French doors are pretty, but only if you're not going to go in and out of that room all the time, and only if you have room for the door swing. Will you continue the same flooring as the sun room in the kitchen, or switch?

Hi chaimama! This remodel was supposed to begin 2 years ago, so I certainly understand about delays. I hope you won't have to wait too long. I will definitely post some pics for you when I have them. I'm hoping the marble will be in by end of next week. The stainless steel counters won't go in until second week of March. It takes 3 weeks to fabricate them, and we're going on vacation soon in a few weeks, so they won't install till we get back. Oopsie, sorry for thread-jack, havnfun! Erika

it really is a personal preference, but i am doing my perimeter cabs in a cottage white with distressing and the island will be a tuscan sun cherry with distressing. i wanted to be safe at first and do it all white, but each time i flipped through a magazine my eye went to the contrasting color on the perimeter cabs and island. good luck with your decision; i don't think you can make a "wrong choice".

Do you know what kind of wood he is using? There are reactive stains that change the color of wood based on the tannins and other chemicals already present in the wood. Some are beautiful, and with the LVT you chose I think it could be really a nice combo. Very pretty choices. But together eh. Can you go darker. What are the other options? Show us.

Maple can be stained darker so you have some contrast with your floors, and I think the darker stain would also look better with the green cabinets. I have a maple island that is the same shade as the example below.
