White Cabinets/Nutmeg Island- what color stain on my floors HELP

Our kitchen is almost done...but, I need some suggestions on floor stain color. I'm used to natural/poly. But I love the look of darker (not too dark). My kitchen has white cabinets on perimeter and a nutmeg (oversized) island with calcutta marble countertops. My floors are white oak.. I sampled a bunch of colors but nothing that seemed to link the two well.... If anyone has suggestions/photos and names of stain color I would be most grateful.

Try something that exudes a crystalized beauty. I personally think granite would look fantastic and it blends well with white and marble.

I have almost the same color scheme as you. My floors are also white oak. They used to be unstained, poly only. After 11 years they were very yellowish. I wanted something darker, but not too dark. I chose English Chestnut. I'm very happy with how it turned out and am very glad I didn't go darker. Sorry these photos aren't great, most of my lighting still isn't hooked up. Ignore the dust please!:

Our kitchen is certainly not traditional and we do not have any white in it, but we do have very dark wood floors and chocolate stained cabinets. They are very similar stains and the difference is only noticeable in bright natural light. It's not a look I see very often, almost never actually, but it was the only floor color we liked for the whole house and the stain for the cabinets was also the only one we liked of our options. We did not exactly have a vision in mind when we began (we're young, first-timers), and maybe we would make different decisions now, but we like our kitchen... except for still being unable to decide on granite a year later. It sounds like you have a vision and a very nice one, so I am all for the espresso/white combination on espresso floors. I think a lot of people immediately shake their heads at dark floors with dark cabinets, especially when the stains are very similar, because it's not that commonplace, so it's hard to find an instance of it done right, and fear that the kitchen will on the whole be too dark. Without a layout it is of course hard to comment on where the white cabinets should be placed, but what I might suggest is placing the white cabinets in the area(s) that don't get as much natural light from windows and such. This will keep your espresso cabinets nearer the pools of natural light and your kitchen looking brighter overall. Good luck; I think it will look beautiful.

We have quartersawn white oak floors that have no stain and just an aluminum oxide finish for protection...they were pre-finished in a very matte finish we specified to be put on at the mill. The quarter sawing changes the appearance of the grain so they may look a little different from yours unless yours are also quartersawn? We love the color and though they do scratch a little (we have two VERY active larger dogs, a Border Collie and and English Shepherd)the lighter color hides the scratches so far and doesn't show a lot of dirt. Oh, the floor stain. I about had a nervous breakdown last weekend selecting the floor stain. We finally choose Fruitwood (minwax) and I can't say I'm 100% sold yet. Everyone besides me thinks it's perfect. Anyway, my cabinets are white with a glaze that makes them creamy, and the island is maple with a stain and a glaze on it. Here's a pic with several stain samples. The ones shown are (L to R) golden oak, fruitwood, early american and the one across the bottom is provencial. The one I selected definitely looks best with the island - I just love dark wood. Wish I'd have selected Provencial. All are minwax stains. I took some pics since the floors were stained this week, but they aren't in photobucket yet. Will try to post tonight. Also, there was a similar question a couple of days ago. I would suggest carrying the vinyl planks into the kitchen. That looks like colonial white granite, so I would go with white subway tile backsplash. Make sure to get samples of the backsplash to compare to your cabinet color and countertops (you wouldn't want a bright white backsplash with off-white cabinets). Also, depending on the variation in the actual slab of granite you chose, colonial white should work with most off-whites (BM Simply White, Cloud White, White Dove; SW Pure White, Alabaster, Snowbound are good examples of off-white). If you are set on tile, it should be from one of the colors in your granite and should not have a pattern. It's a good rule of thumb to have only one pattern in hard finishes (most tiles are blotchy in color which means they have a pattern). ETA: I don't see any reason why the island needs to have a contrasting finish. I will borrow this from Maria "boring now equals timeless later" :). You don't want each finish to be the star. In this case, the countertops have the pattern and will be the star and everything else will nicely support them. Then, your styling, décor, artwork, etc will bring the kitchen to life from there.

I am having the same issue as my color scheme is similar as well. I'd love to go walnut-ish dark, but my super shedder of a yellow lab prohibits it. Looking forward to responses here.

havnfun, I'm getting Carrara on the island and perimeter, stainless steel around the cooktop. I adore Calacatta, but it was just too pricey considering all the countertops I need. Can't wait to see yours!

katie, you're a sweetie. BTW, I'm in the same boat with my German Shepherd. She sheds like there's no tomorrow!

Please post pics when you get them. I am considering the same counter top choices as you with white cabinets. I am often interested in your threads. We had to hold on our remodel a week before demo so I am living through your kitchen!

Hi chaimama!

This remodel was supposed to begin 2 years ago, so I certainly understand about delays. I hope you won't have to wait too long. I will definitely post some pics for you when I have them. I'm hoping the marble will be in by end of next week. The stainless steel counters won't go in until second week of March. It takes 3 weeks to fabricate them, and we're going on vacation soon in a few weeks, so they won't install till we get back.

My floors are QS white oak. My stain is nutmeg, toned down once. I wanted a little color but not dark. My cabinets are going in Monday. They are a medium cherry glazed perimeter with a creamy white glazed island. I dont have lighting yet so these did not come out too well.

So, we decided on English Chestnut with red mahogany (4:1) ratio, toned down one level. I'll post photos shortly.
