Zone 10b roses please

Hello. I live in southern California, zone 10b. It is arid, hot and can be windy. Any suggestions for fragrant and disease-free roses? I avoid chemicals and only spray with natural products. I grow all types of roses. Suggestions are appreciated.

I'm sure lots of locals will chime in, but I recommend Tea (not Hybrid Tea), China and Noisettes. I grow mainly Teas, and of these I'd highly recommend Mrs BR Cant, Marie van Houtte, Mme Lombard, Rubens and G Nabbonand. Teas are large roses though, so you do need to give them plenty of room, particularly in your climate.

What size space are you working with? We can give better recommendations if you give us a sense of how size constraints... and also if you want a Bush or climber... and if you have color preferences.

Yes, if the roses are in containers, you can probably plant at any time. If, OTOH, you are talking about Bare Root plants, the time for these has passed in Southern California. Probably, it's passed in other mild-climate areas. As noted, we don't know where you are located. That does matter! In Southern California, it's also late for a real pruning. If you prune now, you're cutting off your spring blooms. Better, at this stage (in Southern California) to just clip off any dead growth. Remove dead blooms and hips. (Hips, or Heps, are the rose's seed pods.) Chuck's advice is great. Look for the Ortho book on roses, or any basic "how-to" book on roses. And keep on asking questions. Jeri

That's true, she smells somehow like sweet bananas :). I like this scent. My soil is potted soil from e.b stone- rose planting mix ( ph around 7) plus alfalfa pallets under the mulch. My tap water ph is around 9 ( I lower it with Straw's recipe and mix gypsum plus potash) . I am sure till now the soil has become alkaline. My patio has no shade, the roses get all day sun. Probably the lavender color is the result of my feeding mixtures, and perhaps the temperatures..

dirtygardener on the other one i used the Miracle Grow fertilizer for plants and roses. It seems to like it because out of nowhere it bloomed four roses at the exact same time. The reason i had bought those on clearance was because they were kind of ugly and had no blooms so no one bought them. They looked liked they were going to die, but alas, they really turned around after i cared for them for some weeks. Do you have any brand suggestions i should try out? These are the only two rose plants i have.

I am in Palm Beach County Zone 10.... I also get roses from Cool Roses .... they are a great nursery. You can call Debbie or Geoff and ask... they are really helpfule. I have done both.... plant in the summer and plant in the fall. The nice thing about Cool Roses is that they are NOT grown under shade cloth so they are use to the really hot and humid weather.... So they can go out into the ground. Did you get your roses on Fortuniana or own root.... either way should be fine, but you will have to handle them a little differently. Your Fortuniana roses will have shallow roots and the own roots won't. You will need to mulch heavy in order to keep the fortuniana roots cool especially until the roses get well rooted.... but do NOT put the mulch so that it touches the trunk of the rose bush. Also, you will need to stake them very well because (this has happened to me) they started to root when we get summer gales or hurricanes and the wind rocks the newly rooted plants setting them back.... Once I learned to stake and mulch I had pretty good luck. If you do plant them in the ground you do NOT want to fertilize them until later in the fall... you want the rose building up roots, not putting out top growth.... this time of year we will be attacted by chili thrips so keeping the top growth to a min. is best..... and if you plant them in the ground, even though Cool Roses plants are use to the sun, you may want to shade your roses for a week or two..... Honestly, I have kept some of their roses in pots during the summer, just because it was WAY to hot for me to tear out the grass and build a new bed.... they did fine in the pots I purchased them in until it cooled off enough for me to get out there and plant.... I have also planted some in existing beds had just a few problems.... easily corrected.... don't push for new growth, but get some spinosad so if you do get chili thrips you can spray (early early morning or late afternoon) and make sure you stake until they are WELL established..... Thank you! I have about a third of an acre and grow many roses. Most are planted with lavendars, sages, and other plants. I avoid orange roses, but have mostly all shades of pinks, light apricots, buffs, and a few reds.

I have some Tea roses, H.P. and one Bourbon. Right now Grandmother's Hat is brilliant, and Souvenir..Victor Hugo and General Tartas are huge and in bloom.

The rest are Hybrid Teas and David Austin shrub roses.

My Meilland, Kordes, Buck and Delbard usually do well.

I have several unhappy plants that I will replace. Earlier I had a HUGE problem with rust, and now a few roses have black spot. I try to keep organic/chemical free, so I want roses that are as disease free as possible.

I also look for fragrance. Doing well as a cut flower is also important as I share my roses with friends and neighbors. All suggestions are most appreciated.

What roses are unhappy in your yard right now?

Organic products are chemicals as well.

Recently I had to remove two David Austins-- Heritage and Sharif Asma. (Over the years I've lost Bredon, Abraham Darby, and more)

Right now black spot is a problem for Graham Thomas and Tamara. Bronze Star, next to Graham Thomas, is a black spot magnet. Julio Iglesias is underperforming as is Just Joey. My Mme. Joseph Bonnaire and Viking Queen are not as I hoped.

My heat star in Sacramento is Strike It Rich. Smells great and only begins to fry at 105.

Mr Lincoln grows very well there, in zone 10b, loves the heat, and is an excellent variety.

Unfortunately I have noticed Austin type do not really do as well in the hot climate with blazing sun and no winter chill.
