What is the best time to plant roses for zone 10B

Please tell me best time to plant, prune, and whatever else needs to be done to roses. I have never done any gardening so any help would be appreciated. If you use any "terms" please explain as I am totally ignorant on the subject. I'm anxious to get started and don't want to miss the time frame for planting.

You don't say where you are. We respect your privacy, but there are huge differences between 10B California, 10B Florida, 10B Thailand, etc. We need a little more specific regional area to give you the most accurate information.

I'm in Florida and I have pretty much planted roses any time of the year, with the exception of the hottest days of summer. Warmer weather, I tend to water more, but I also use a lot of mulch to keep things moist.

Wow... this is a tall order. I LOVE my philodendrons and they are almost care-free. However, I do have to trim the bottom growth all year long so I don't know if that is something to consider. Plumbago is great for their prolific blue blooms but will get overgrown in no time... I trim mine at least 4x's a year. You can hardly go wrong with live oaks. If you want to create shade and have a long lived tree they are perfect. A fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) is low maintenance and a native that I think is quite underused. It will only get to about 30 feet tall and has the added attraction of blooming. Linchat has a great suggestion with the firebush which I echo... they are wonderful for color and attracting butterflies. Coontie is my all time favorite no-care evergreen. They are cold and drought tolerant, long-lived, very hardy... ZERO maintenance. In keeping with the native theme I am a big fan of saw palmettos ... other than occasional trimming of the bottom fronds they are long-lived, hardy native plants with ZERO maintenance. Then there are some grasses I'd suggest for care-free ease. Muhly grass and Gama grass need very little attention once established. They take up a good amount of space and thrive in full sun, poor soil and add movement to the garden. Hope that helps... sounds like a fun project. Meems

A comment in HMF by John Hook from France regarding SdMLV: 'This rose troubles me. It has been growing everywhere around here reputedly for the last 100 years, over this period people have continually taken cuttings and started their own plants. My problem is that there are so many variants, Leaf shape and length, prickles, once blooming or remontant and flower shade. None of the clones are completely different though, they have usually only 1 variant' I have the rose on order from Trevor White in the UK. From the pics I see this looks to me like a hybrid gigantea in the shape of Fortune's Double Yellow rather like a 'normal' Tea rose. Not reblooming is of course very different than not blooming at all! I can only attribute the refusal to bloom to lack of sufficiently cold temps during the winter. Sometimes some roses take some years to bloom btw, this may have to do with the 'age' (nodal age) of the cutting from which the rose was created. Sorry for the digression.

I have two rugosas coming and curious to know more about how they will do in my warm climate. Do they get as big as in their preferred cold climates or does the heat somewhat inhibit their height? Would they still get the typical rugosa fall foliage colors in zone 10-11? They probably won't go dormant so I am thinking they might just stay green all year and not get the fall foliage? Would they be happier in a part-shaded spot if they don't like the heat? If anyone here is growing them in a warm zone it would be great to learn from your experience with them!

I am in NE FL I have PJP2 in a big pot on Fort. It can get 7ft in the pot. I bet it could get larger in the ground. I cut back every spring but it will grow right back. I would take mine out of the pot but the roots are way way down into the ground at this point. It can get some black spot during the rainest part of the year but recovers quickly. I dont spray anything, so your mileage may vary. It grows best in full sun. It is one of my best bloomers and very fragrant. Put it in a place where you can enjoy it in the evening. It kinda glows in the twilight hours. Don Juan is a good bloomer and will get taller than PJP2 here. It isnt real wide and you could put it on a trellis and wrap it or espalier to keep the shape you want. Munstead Wood would probably get the same size as PJP2 if it was on Fort. It is a very good healthy rose here and the fragrance wafts! It is a darker red but is its darkest in winter. It can go a little magenta in summer heat whereas Don Juan holds its red color in the heat. I hooe this helps :)

You should be able to plant pretty much anytime you want to.
We do need more info to help with specifics but the rule of thumb is "anytime you can work the soil you can plant Roses"
I suggest you go to a good nursery, buy a few Roses, a book by Ortho called "All About Roses" amd plant them in a sunny spot.

Yes, if the roses are in containers, you can probably plant at any time.
If, OTOH, you are talking about Bare Root plants, the time for these has passed in Southern California.
Probably, it's passed in other mild-climate areas.

As noted, we don't know where you are located.
That does matter!
In Southern California, it's also late for a real pruning.
If you prune now, you're cutting off your spring blooms.

Better, at this stage (in Southern California) to just clip off any dead growth.
Remove dead blooms and hips. (Hips, or Heps, are the rose's seed pods.)

Chuck's advice is great.
Look for the Ortho book on roses, or any basic "how-to" book on roses.
And keep on asking questions.
