Stuck on living room design adjacent to kitchen

We are in the middle of a kitchen redesign and looking for inspiration for our adjacent living room. We’d like a TV in there and enough couch to have the whole family. Thinking of possible wall unit and new fireplace down the road. Any thoughts on colors/layout? Our angled fireplace, recently painted white, is making it difficult! Thanks in advance. Roughly 9ft deep by 14.5ft wide.

We had a similar dilemma with the angled fireplace in our previous home. There were windows on the adjacent wall like yours. I moved furniture around several times, thinking that the fireplace should be the focal point and furniture should face it but that looked awkward in our space. Finally I decided that the fireplace was visually part of the solid wall on the other side and just made that entire wall the focal point. We placed a piano on that wall and hug a large, bold painting over it to draw the eye across that wall

Pardon the red wall opposite, it was the 90s!

A fireplace in the corner limits furniture placement. A sectional sofa limits furniture placement, but if you're wanting a single sofa large enough for a large family, that might well be your only option. The other drawback of a sectional sofa is that if any part of it gets worn or torn or stained, then you could end up needing to replace the entire sofa to be rid of the problem.

How many people -- adults/children -- do you need to have seated and what are the ages of any children? How do you feel about a standard two seat sofa for adults and modern bean bag chairs, easily movable to/from bedrooms, for the children?

The room is not huge and you don't want to crowd it -- especially if you're adding a bar to the island -- so you might want to use narrow tables.

Threeapples and other forum members, I hope my comments weren't taken as "snarky." I was being respectful but offering another point of view. I was very much influnced in our build by my grandparents' house in South Georgia. It was built in the 1830's and was tweaked through the generations. That house originally had the kitchen as a seperate structure and then on a side porch, and eventually after the REA, the new electrified kitchen moved inside and the side porch became the laundry. Hence my comment about the kitchen being a separate structure. Likewise, when we were in the design and build stage, I took notice of moldings in historic houses. George Mason was particulary noted for his love of woodwork, and his house, Gunston Hall, has very ornate woodwork in the most public rooms, less so in the private rooms, none at all in the kitchen and none in the upstairs bedrooms (if my memory is correct). I thought about all of this when I was choosing moldings and followed suit while acknowledging that I live in different times and making allowances for that. My upstairs moldings are very simple. My dining room is the most ornate. My kitchen/family room molding is fairly nice, since the ceilings are tall and it is a gathering area for friends and family. It is a farily public room. However, the crown molding is very smooth for ease of cleaning. As far as the cleaning issue goes, I cook up a storm and everything in my kitchen needs to be easily cleaned. I have simple beadboard backsplashes and stainless steel behind my range. A tile mosaic would be a nightmare for me after a big stir-fry night. I also have dust allergies and tried to avoid "dust catchers" in my house. Again, looking for easily cleaned surfaces. My apologies if my remarks were taken as disrespectful. No disrespect or ill will was intended.

I like both Rebunky's and MG's ideas. If you don't want a full banquette, you could still have a window seat and then a dining room table. We had a Craftsman home once and, in addition to dividers between dining and living similar to what MG shared, we had a window seat in the dining room plus wainscot in the dining area in Craftsman-style (not beadboard) with nice, wide moldings at the top to create the plate rail. That and your trim on your doors/windows should easily keep the Craftsman details you love. Of course, I realize that all Craftsman moldings probably aren't the same but we were able to recreate our moldings in a family room addition using various pieces of readily available moldings from HD. I would just add that, imho, if you end up having the w/d in the kitchen, I really don't see the problem with that. I wish I had a picture to share but I someone who has a w/d, side by side, not stacked, in their kitchen behind bookcase doors built on strong piano hinges. The door glide easily and she had some books and pretties displayed. Most of the pretties had museum gel to help hold them in place. She does laundry regularly so the clothes are loaded, washed, folded and put away without laundry piling up. Without a laundry room, you would need to do that in order to not create a mess area. If that's your style, it could work well for you.

There are a million whites and greys. You need to post photos of your cabinets, countertop, backsplash, and flooring choice, because we are not clairvoyant as to what they might look like. Also, regardless, do not paint until the flooring is installed. Your idea of choosing paint color, then flooring, is a mistake. The flooring is a very dominant factor in any room, and cannot be changed easily once it's installed. But paint can be changed any time.

If you plan to put the tv over the fireplace, It might be that you could use two two-seat sofas at right angles placed diagonally across from the fireplace -- or one two-seat sofa and another three-seat sofa -- and create a corner with those with a square table between them to finish the corner where they meet.

Invest in some graph paper and draw, to scale, the size and shape of the room with all the doors and windows and fireplace and island bar included. Then measure the sofa(s) you are considering purchasing and draw their "footprint"/size, to scale (perhaps on card stock) and cut them out so you can place them around the room and see how they fit before investing in them. You want to be sure you have walk space through and into the room.

Do you use the fireplace: is it a wood burning fireplace or gas or electric -- does it provide much needed heat during a power outage or could you live without it?

It’s not essential but we do turn it on in the winter as we love the ambiance it provides.
