Decoration Piece Has Me Stumped!

Not sure why would you ask that - maybe because I am discussing curio cabinets and decor ideas which are typically done by women?? I am in the process of finalizing my living room which was empty for years. I am definitely our typical guy and as such - don't have a real keen eye for decorating, but I do know how to ask the right questions and get help from the experts. My room is turning out great and its fun because I'm conquering things I knew little about. As far as my curio.. I really don't have a lot of stuff in it but I bought it from Craig s List (solid PA House Cherry) so it looked great in my very traditional decor.. I never really collected anything over the years. So its kind of a mixture of different things.. A friend gave me a few Lennox pieces and my kids are starting a collection for me called the "Willows" which are distinct pieces of family members from Hallmark stores. Comments (11)OK, I came up with two layouts for a first try plus 2 alternate oven/cooktop options. Layout #1 leaves the full-height wall b/w the FR and Kitchen intact. Layout #2 removes that wall. The knee wall is removed in both layouts - unless there's a crucial need for it, it's wasted space. Layout #1 has two seats at the peninsula; #2 has three seats. With at least two seats, there will be one for each child for snacks after school, for homework while you're prepping/cooking, or for helping out. Layout #1 has double wall ovens + MW Drawer. The two alternate cooktop wall layouts for #1 have a single wall oven with a MW in the oven stack. (The MW can be a countertop model placed in an alcove built into the oven stack.) Layout #2 has a single wall oven (from alternate 1a). Both layouts... Both counter runs along the wall are 3" deeper than standard (28.5" vs 25.5") with 27" deep base cabinets and 15" deep upper cabinets. Those extra 3" provide extra workspace, deeper cabinets for more storage, and help narrow the aisle b/w the two walls a little bit. I don't recommend deepening them anymore, though, b/c you then have to shorten the peninsula to compensate so you have usable aisles b/w the peninsula and refrigerator as well as b/w the peninsula and wall above. Note: I appear to have mislabeled the counter depths - the counters are 28.5", not the 29.5" that the labels say in the layouts. The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep & Cooking Zones. This makes it easy for multiple cooks prepping as well as allows someone to be cleaning up and loading/unloading the DW without getting in the way of the cooks. (As a family with both parents working full-time, we found that cleanup and prepping/cooking often happened at the same time.) If the DW is running, you won't have to prep over a running DW (steam venting on you while working is not fun - nor is the heat that often accompanies a running DW) There is both a cleanup sink and prep sink (you'll see why when you look at the layouts - the cleanup sink is across a 90" aisle from the Prep & Cooking Zones). The aisle b/w the Kitchen and FR at the peninsula is 43" wide. The peninsula has a nice expanse of space for school & science fair projects, baking projects, staging food for parties, wrapping gifts, other crafts and/or sewing projects. With the prep sink in the corner, two things are accomplished: keeping the main/most accessible part of the peninsula free of "obstacles" and utilizing the corner area with a sink base (both corners and sink bases are notoriously poor for storage - so combine them into one and minimize their impact!) There is at least 45" of space b/w the cooktop and prep sink (45" with DOs, 51" possible with Single Oven) The refrigerator is located so that it's easily accessible from both inside the kitchen (for cooks) and outside the kitchen (for snackers) without cooks......See Morelayout help, mcm ranch

I have an affection for MCM homes and would love to see you make yours work better for you while maintaining true to your home's architecture and personality. So you MUST showcase that Saarinen! If you don't, give it to me. :) How about this? Change to a range. Put a microwave in the upper cabinet next to fridge and a second oven, if you really need one, below. Alternatively, I've read some folks here at GW have nixed the microwave and just use a speed oven. I'm not clear how that works as I've never had a speed oven nor do I really understand how they function but that's something you might want to research. I guess it all depends on how you use your microwave, how often, etc. Casters - what I'm thinking is that you could have the lower cabinets there put on good industrial casters so you could pull that counter out and move it to use as a peninsula on the occasions you need more prep space or for buffet service. Alternatively, is there a pantry or some other area where you could store a small kitchen worktable/cart that can be easily rolled out when needed? Sink: I would get a large single sink. Even one of those awesome Stages 45 sinks which would work well in your space. Quite often on the wider sinks, people will have two faucets. One on the prep side and another on the clean-up side. With a wide sink like that, there is enough space for people to use the same sink at the same time for the different tasks without crowding each other or fighting for use of the faucet. When someone isn't doing clean-up, you could have two people prepping at the same time. It looks like each side of the sink would now have ample counter to do so. Also, moving the range into that niche provides you a nice separation from sink to range so one person can prep to right of sink while someone else cooks without them being so close that there are congestion issues. Here's a an alternative idea to make use of the under stairs area unless it's being used for something else. If the stairs rise high enough, would it be possible to inset the cabinets into the space under the stairs? So the uppers don't show here as they are inset under the stairs. This allows the lower cabinet to be more accessible by the cook if they need to place something to the right of the cooktop, giving them more counter space to do so. It also makes it easier to slide into the bench seating next to the amazing Saarinen tulip. I think it will also showcase the tulip better as it won't be so crowded by cabinetry. I actually thing I would nix the upper between window and door because it will impact the light flow and airiness in that area and crowd the door much like the fridge would. Put your daily dishes, silverware, and glasses in the drawers next to the DW. It's easy and convenient storage. I love storing my like items in drawers instead of uppers. And it's at the end of the run where someone can get a plate or set the table without getting in the way of anyone doing clean-up, prep or cooking. And it's close enough to the fridge where it's handy for grabbing a glass to get a drink....See MoreThis room has me stumped!!

I thought that i was done but Last night your situation touched my heart because I remembered how I felt about my room and feeling blocked. So I put together a rendition with the thought; "What would I do if this room was mine and my husband's?" So with your blessing I will take some pics of what I did just for your consideration. Remember, these are only my suggestions but the final decision is all yours. So let's see what you think and what will really work.
