The house we live in was built in the early ‘60s. Over the decades it‘s had a few decorating themes, which we have discovered almost archeologically! By the time we bought it, all the trim was white. The only problem? The earlier paints were oil-based, and the white was latex, and the trim surfaces hadn’t been properly prepared or primed, and the white peeled off, revealing the earlier colors .

The guest bath had apple green trim. We think that was from the “home alone” era. The entire half bath and back hall were country blue, kind of a light denim/chambray, on the doors and trim, probably from the late ‘60s-70s country movement. One bedroom was painted mint green when we moved in (it matched the background color in the 1980s Laura Ashley fabric used in the room), but under the white trim was pale blue. Another bedroom was tan under the white.

So, I say . . . Have fun! Color! I love color! But some day, down the road, you will want to change it, so be sure the surface will take a new coat of paint.

I'd like green trim and white walls, but the greens you're looking at are sort of muddy and not what I'd consider "colorful". That probably means they will age better than the green I would pick, though!

If you stuck to primary colors it would tie into the schoolhouse inspiration.

Your house is going to be gorgeous! I would go with white walls and green trim; to me it is fresher than white trim/colorful walls. Do you read Chris Loves Julia? They have some rooms with the white wall/colorful trim, but some of their rooms are wallpapered or a different color. Love that FB color you've chosen.

Green is usually a soothing, relaxing color. If you want more playfulness, you might have to bump it up a notch to a more intense and vibrant green. I would focus on adding the color via the furnishings and keep the trim/doors neutral. In a few years, you may have a different vision and it is easier to make changes via accessories and maybe a bit of wallpaper or new drapes than repainting everything.

Oh I just love all your ideas! I’d do the green on all the trim for sure. Depending on what’s going on in the room I would consider green walls too! Check out Steven Gambrel’s sag harbor house. He used blues and grays but his color pairings are an inspiration!

I really enjoy seeing color trim. I think for your schoolhouse feel I would want to add some colorful furniture as well.

That is a tough decision... I LOVE the idea of the green trim, I'm just not a fan of white walls. However I think it would look amazing, especially mixing in some wallpaper. I also do like the idea of a white or warm white trim and bolder paint colors mixed throughout!

We lived in an 1855 brownstone in Boston that had sage green trim throughout, with some exposed brick walls and also a black and white tile floor in the kitchen. Absolutely loved it. Thanks for not doing grey. I also used BM Pear Green (I'm almost sure that's what it is called) in a black and white bathroom in another house and loved that too. The only thing I'd avoid is having each room a completely different color. I think that could get old.
