Should cabinet doors match throughout house?
Comments (17)Thanks everyone. Though it would have been simpler (much) to have chosen a "theme" and followed it throughout the house, I did not. I hope my home won't end up looking schizophrenic! My kitchen is quite "country," with Shaker-style pine cabinets in a medium stain. The powder room has a freestanding vanity with built-in countertop and sink and has more of a traditional, furniture-style design. The kids' bath has beveled doors (I still don't know what you call the detail on the cabinet) that are painted white. The guest room bath has a pedestal sink--no cabinets at all. The master has more of a "spa" like feel to it, so I went with a very elaborate, detailed, elegant "beveled" cabinet. They will be stained a deep mahogany brown. Oh, and the laundry room has cheapo Home Depot stock white cabinets. No matchey matchey in my house! I think my builder thought I was nuts, but each room sort of developed a personality as we moved along the design process. FYI our construction is a MAJOR remodel in which we tore the existing house down to the studs, added a second story, and expanded and reconfigured virtually all existing dowstairs rooms. The end result will basically be a custom home in a high-end community, so we definitely did not want a "track home" feel....See MoreWindow treatments......matching throughout house?
Comments (12)I'm glad you asked this question because I was about to, also. I have yet to put up any w/ts in our new house, but really need to (for sun, not privacy). I'm thinking of 2" faux wood blinds in a few rooms, but not everywhere. My dilemma is in the front---I need some blinds on upstairs' rooms, but don't want them in the 2 downstairs rooms (DR and study/library). I was hoping that just having them the same color (off-white) in all the front rooms would be enough? Thanks!...See MoreColor match or not for switches, switchplates etc.
Comments (8)In terms of complexity, your husband is kinda correct on that. But it is nice to make the utilities like switches and receptacles blend in as much as possible, at least in my opinion. But in my house this has lead to Lutron Black, Lutron Palladium, Lutron off-white, two push button switches, and matching Lutron covers, back painted glass covers, custom plated metal covers, mirrored covers etc, ad nauseum. The next owner is going to have his hands full if he wants to change the paint colors. I usually don't paint the plug itself or the switch itself but if I want the switch to blend in best I use the small toggle not the big Lutron style, and I might change the plug from white to ivory to grey to brown or black depending upon the wall color. There are a couple of companies who make completely concealable switches and receptacles (Imagine a template to cut out the switchplate in wood, granite, or cover it in plaster with just the actual slots for the plug to go in, for example--and all completely flush with the wall surface. There are "mounting depth jigs" and all kinds of tools involved). Extremely expensive as you can imagine with parts and labor in the hundreds for Each outlet or switch. Minimalists have to make a lot of money....See MoreDo all of the finishes match throughout your house?
Comments (8)I don't think the entire house has to match. Here is what I have: All bathrooms have either matte or polished chrome. And within each bathroom, the light fixtures and faucets and hardware match (metal-wise). In our first floor, all the light fixtures are either ORB (kitchen/family room), black (living room), or copper (dining room). So they don't all match, but they work together. Door hardware is ORB throughout most of the downstairs. The bedrooms, which are all upstairs, have a variety of fixtures in different metals. I don't care that much about having the bedrooms consistent, but I like to have some sense of continuity in the more "public" rooms....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
