Comments (32)Thank you, thank you, everyone. I went to Amanda's on Saturday, the kids and I played on the Slip N Slide while Elery fried a turkey and Amanda and mother made fruit salad and potatoes. Makayla and I planted 6 strawberry plants in her raised garden bed and Madi splashed in the water. We had lemon cake with cream cheese frosting for dessert. Of course, first I had to walk that mile of fence because I had a short where the deer had run through. Darned things, they can jump 8 feet or something, but they never jump the fence, they go through, no matter how many markers I put on the wire so they can see it. Grrr. Rats on hooves, I need to eat more of them. I finished planting the garden, putting in two dozen sweet potato plants, so that fills up my half acre of tilled soil. Comments (31)AnnT, the Beltline Bar seems like one of those places that never changes, it's been the same forever. Elery and I have been married 10 years and he'd never been there, so it's been that long since I was there. It hasn't changed except they used to have that plaster statue of a rearing horse out front, and now that's gone. I looked for the horse, that was my landmark, and it wasn't there! Elery's middle son, Chris, was talking about restaurants in Grand Rapids and I mentioned that there were hundreds. He agreed, but said that somehow, no matter what he planned, when he was in Grand Rapids he ended up at the Beltline. Not gourmet food, of course, much more American than Mexican, but still good... It was pretty much a perfect day for me, and today I spent the day in the garden, so two days that have made me very, very happy, as well as all the good wishes here. Thank you all again. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoWell, the verdict is in...I cut in a little early so the chocolate is a little soft. My take on it...eh. No toes curling.
The pie crust...is definitely tender but it's not very flavorful.
The filling was delish when it was warm, toe curling luscious. But now that it's cooled off, it's fine. Not great but fine.
The cream is whipped cream...no surprises there.
The chocolate curls came out fine and were easy to do.
However, there's something very off about the full combo that is a miss. The curls are *very* chocolate, the crust is very bland and the filling is just so so. Somehow the balance of flavors to make the whole dessert work isn't there.
I had filling left over which is in a bowl like a pudding, and I think I may enjoy that more than with the pie crust.
But I have enjoyed making it, enjoyed the licking and picking along the way and am glad that only DH and I have to deal with the results. If it was a dinner party, I'd be disappointed.
It is extremely rich...please don't ask the calorie content!
