I want to go 'Towel Bar Free' in Bathroom
Comments (122)Ha, Stinky! My DH is..."slow to change". He does the exact same thing in the exact same order every morning and gets all out of sorts when he is forced to make accommodations. I've only been married 4 years, but I've learned it is much easier to change the environment than try to force change by direction. He just digs in his heels. Example: about 6 months ago I wanted to hire housekeeper. DH said it was unnecessary. I dropped the idea for a few months. I then started talking about how the dog got lonely during the day when we are at work and how nice it would be if someone would come keep her company. And now, we have a housekeeper who walks the dog..! I don't think I'm being sneaky or devious, but now we are both happy. Sometimes a different approach is needed. He may say the same things about me. But anyway, that's a long explanation of why simply telling DH that he is making a mess by wadding up the towels on the bars won't work. So having hooks may be my way around it. Back to topic, though, I was thinking of something like these from RH? Do they look like the towel would stay on well?...See Morebarn door or pocket door? Comments (12)I don't even want to think what is in the crevices around my pocket door, as I've never thought to check it out! As funkycamper said, there is little room for that. Our house, built in 1952, has a pocket door between the kitchen and dining room. In our 37 years here, we've never had an issue with it. It sometimes groans and drags a bit on one side edge a bit when we pull it out, but then I would groan and drag too, if I were 64 years old! Honestly, I have closed it no more than thirty times during our life here. Our outlets and wall switch are on the opposite side of the pocket door, so maybe placement of those items could be a consideration. Best wishes....See MoreCrash course on doors? Comments (36)"I went to work in an office that had a pocket door that never worked right because someone had driven nails into it at some point and it was never the same after" (palimpsest) Yes. This happened to us when DH nailed the baseboard on the wall between the laundry and kitchen. The door came off track. When we renovate I will replace or remove. However, this was builder grade. On our extension I added three pocket doors. The one I had put in for the powder room is a solid core door, not thinner than most doors, as I wanted as much sound-dampening as possible with such a device. We used Johnson Hardware - not the home depot variety which runs $ 40 or so, but commercial grade. Look at the Johnson site under 1500 Commercial Grade and you will also find non-standard size frames (door max thickness 1 3/4"). Use a good carpenter....See MoreCan a pocket door go behind a shower tile wall?
Comments (24)HI RM-there is an old thread about exactly this issue. You can search it but I found this response: MLB Design Group I am big fan of pocket doors, and frequently design them into homes - especially bathrooms and other small spaces. I always note on my plans to sheathe the wall -- both sides -- with 3/4" plywood. Usually the contractor does this onsite after the pocket door/hardware is installed. Not only does this plywood strengthen the wall, it also helps with sound-deadening. You'll need to be mindful of this added 1-1/2" thickness to the jamb, and evaluate how it impacts walls inside and outside the room. Once you have 3/4" plywood on the wall in the bathroom, you can then install hooks and towel bars depending on your plan. For a shower, your tile person will apply the water-proofing/concrete board on top of the plywood. Your plumbing lines will not be in this wall since the door will be "pocketing" into that space, so your shower head/valve/etc., will be located at a different wall. Done right, it's a great solution. Have fun!...See Morespiritflower
