pocket door vs standard door
Comments (7)Awesome! I was afraid it was a lot more. Even if it's double or tripple that amount, it's still a reasonable upcharge for the two doorways I have in mind. They really need a pocket door instead of a standard door....See MoreDouble pocket doors or hinged doors?
Comments (28)What did you do? (Warning: Novel coming:) I am here to tell you that antique pocket door hardware is perfect, but 50s through early 90s hardware is AWFUL. Who ever thought a J channel would hold a door that gets a lot of use was an idiot. But not as big an idiot as anyone who installed it and walked away. It is ALL in the installation. I've put in 15 pocket doors using the Johnson Hardware's extruded tracks, with their 3-wheel system. No matter what the weight, I always use 3 rollers. Not only can I, a self-taught, dangerous DIYer, do it, but it's well balanced and beautiful. You don't need those giant pocket door kits, either. A 2x6 base plate, then 2x4s turned sideways down either side of the 2x6 makes the channel. The hardware goes on the top, add wheels, bumpers, trim and DONE. DONE I SAY! Your hardware fears are only valid if the same installation you're experiencing is used again, or the installation is too quick or faulty. I don't know what I'd do without the 9 extra square feet in my rooms. I've even used antique French doors (perfect for your dining room!?) in 3 of them. In the other doors, I'm using antique, horizontal 6-panel doors (harder to find than the 5-panel and cooler doors, I think) which are solid and beautiful. More interesting than any slab door. The only other tip I would suggest is to make certain they're exterior thickness, which is at least 1.75" thick. Interior doors these days are usually 1 3/8" thick and rather flimsy for a pocket. Today I'm installing the trim on the last of the French doors I'm using. It's an antique (i.e. also reclaimed) and just beautiful. Great sight line from the window in the mudroom, into the kitchen. Gives me more light than my dark kitchen than I'd had before. As you can see, I can't rave enough about my pockets. Don't let some contractor tell you they're too difficult or more expensive. Show them this DIYer's post and I'll help their pro-butts out. Remember, if this (nitwit) chick can do it, a pro should do it with their hammer tied behind their back....See Morepocket door frames: Johnson vs. Häfele/Hawa vs ???
Comments (38)HI all. I've down the pocket door rabbit hole for quite a while. I am looking for three (3) pocket doors, all in - 32" for all. Two will be into and out of a walk through closet and one will be into a water closet (poop room). I have used Johnson and I don't want to do it again. It is 2023, April and everything is so much more expensive than I remember but here is what I could find - All Hawa w/ Futura frame and 80/Z soft close - $1,006 Cavity Sliders, with soft close - in stock locally - $720 HDPocketDoors - 80/Z $986 80/B $1278 I am leaning toward HDPocketDoors - looks like a solid frame with Hawa hardware at a reasonable price. Some questions for y'all - 80Z vs 80B ..... What I like about 80B is the whole mechanism is removable without tearing out hte wall. The top/carrier track stays in and you can remove and adjust and level the actual running track. Pretty slick. But it is a mortised connection to the door and will likely stack up costs as I figure out how to implement. Nothing wrong with 80Z 2x6 vs 2x4 - I can do 2x6 everywhere, even in the existing wall with some added meat. I think a 1-3/4" door and a 2x6 frame will make life easier with install, clearance, and choice of pocket hardware - thoughts ? Cavity Sliders - anybody out there use them ??...See MoreCost of converting regular door to pocket and building a new one?
Comments (7)Is the "new" wall already in place? It will be a lot less expensive to build the wall in anticipation of a pocket door rather than after the fact. The hardware for the good stuff can't be much more than $100. If the "new" wall needs to be opened up: The cost of the door, which could range from 30 dollars for a cheap hollow core at HD to $250/300 for a good solid core, plus the cost of hardware. Installation, adjustment, repair walls, trim everything out, etc. 14-18 hours labor multiplied by how much per hour your locality charges. Plus tax....See MoreCEFreeman
