What should I be doing for my lawn, right now? zone 6a

My lawn is mostly an improved fescue with 5% perennial rye mix. The last couple yrs we have been using weed and feed in the spring with good results. We've also planted grass in patches in the fall to fill in sparse areas. Last yr we skipped the weed and feed (pandemic wasn't conducive to purchasing it) and saw a major uptick in weeds. Mostly clover patches and some crab grass. I'm concerned if we use weed and feed we will have huge patches of dead and not be able to reseed until fall. What would be the best course of action? We don't spend huge amounts on the yard and with 4 kids, homeschooling, a rental house besides the home we live in and tons of animals, we also can't dedicate a huge amount of time to lawn maintenance, but it has to look presentable compared to neighbors who each spend several thousand per summer.
