Any advice appreciated
Comments (3)About the only thing you can do is mow regularly. It's a bit too young for weed killer, but mowing regularly will prevent most weeds from going to seed. You can use herbicides after the first few mowings, read the labels. Fertilizing in spring is generally done around Memorial Day, so now is OK. I would probably put down a half application of starter fertilizer, being sure to water it in. Most hydroseeded lawns are ready for their first mow in about a month when the grass reaches 3 inches. Why yours is growing so slowly could be any number of things. Since this spring was cooler than normal that is probably a part of the problem. If the landscaper used mainly KBG and fine fescues, those take longer to grow. If you haven't been watering often enough is another reason. Spring seedings are often fraught with problems like longer establishment times due to lower soil temps, weed pressure, and disease during the upcoming summer. You will probably lose some grass if this summer is anything like last years, but if it's cooler and wetter then you might make it through with minimal losses....See MoreFall Preparation
Comments (3)Those brown patches you got in summer were probably due to fungal disease, most likely brown patch. Any areas that don't come back will need to be reseeded as tall fescue is a bunch type grass that spreads extremely slowly if at all (Most TTTF sod does have a small percentage of KBG in it though, so that KBG might spread to the bare areas). Yes, most weeds will die off with the cooler weather and first frost, but if you want to kill them now you can with selective herbicides. Depending on what weeds you have you can get rid of most of them with a 2,4 D product like Weed B Gone Max and/or Weed B Gone Clover, Chickweed and Oxalis killer (obviously those target the weeds in their name plus some others). Tenacity is another herbicide that is generating a lot of good buzz in killing off most unwanted yard weeds including the hard to kill ones like poa annua, poa trivialis, and other grassy weeds. As far as bare spots, you will need to seed those with tall fescue seed. Now is a pretty good time in Maryland, for tall fescue you want days in the high seventies, low eighties, nights in the low sixties to high fifties. Just be sure you don't spray those spots with Weed B Gone herbicides. Tenacity can be used with newly seeded turf however. Next year no synthetic fertilizers should be used from Memorial Day to Labor day. Organics are fine however. This year you can fertilize now, again around Halloween, and when top growth stops in November a quick release nitrogen winterizer, but that's optional. Hope this helps....See MoreWhat garlic am I growing, and what should I do next?
Comments (2)No idea at all - they could be hardneck, softneck or elephant and I'd probably scratch a leaf to make sure it smells of garlic. I'm not sure where in Zone 5 you are but normally garlic is planted in the fall and harvested in early summer up here. Right now, I'd do exactly what you are doing and also put some kind of marker as to where they are. If they're garlic, they're probably going to stop growing soon and die back to the bulb by around the end of july. After that, they'll rest a bit and start growing again in the late fall and create heads for you next year....See MoreIt's February, are you doing anything yet?
Comments (3)I am still searching on the web to find out how to get rid of voles. They ate a lot of my plants last year and I was so upset watching them disapear. I am getting a tiller this year and redoing all my beds.Hoping that will help with the voles. I like the one from Home Depot with an edger attchment. Searching new plants and figuring where and how to plant them. Thinking of redesigning my beds due to amount of sun change. I am using a program that I have where I can take a picture of my yard and insert different plants and trees. Checking out mail order sites. Not that I will order this year. I guess you could say I am just day dreaming right now. Marie, South Jersey, Williamstown area. Zone 6 or 7 depending on where you look....See Morefrontporchfarm
