Need advice on a kitchen wall-mounted range hood please!

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a 36" stainless wall-mounted chimney range hood for a new Wolf 30" gas range. CFM range of 400 to 600. Basic looking canopy style hood with basic push buttons. No flashy displays needed. Preferably baffle filters.

I've been researching just about every brand and models and can't really find one brand that out shines everything else. My front runners are Broan, Faber, XO, and Zephyr.

However, when reading reviews for all these brands, all I keep seeing are folks with issues and the recommendation to avoid these brands. Taking that with a grain of salt, since many reviews are usually written from folks that have had a negative experience with their appliances, but it still seems like the number of issues with the motor, circuit boards, excessive noise, etc. seems high.

I don't mind spending more on quality, if it equates to a better product with better functionality and reliability. It just seems that the $500 units and the $1500 units all have the same reliability! All garbage.

Please let me know if anyone has a brand and model that they would highly recommend!

I have a Broan. It's a tad noisy but works well and has been reliable. If it has a circuit board I don't what it could possibly be doing. The lights are good.

I think it's an Elite E64xxx. (600 cfm 36" hood over a 30" high btu gas range.)

I don't like that it has a knob for the light but it's not that bad.

Does it click all the boxes for coverage and CFM? Nah, but it's certainly good enough.

I have a Zephyr and love it! It does a great job clearing the air etc. The noise level is what I would expect for a hood that size, not bad. The LED lights are amazing! And the 5 min delay feature is very useful (the hood turns itself off after 5 min on low...when I'm done cooking).

If you want to go up the interior wall, I suggest that you build the wall with 2 x 6s to provide 5.5 inches of internal gap. Then a 4 or 5 inch by 12 or 14 inch duct will fit. This will cost two inches of room on one side or the other. Eight inch circular duct has an area of about 50 square inches. 4 x 14 is a bit more (56), but square duct has more frictional pressure loss than round duct. If I were doing it, I would use fire-code sheet rock on those walls, and insulate the duct with mineral wool. This would minimize possible rattles from the blower, which I would put on the roof if possible, and provide some slight additional protection in case of a grease fire. Use only galvanized steel duct (stainless steel would also be OK :). kas

The fundamental issue is that fan/blower flow rates are measured in open air. The result is the zero static pressure flow rate. In a hood with filter, shape transitions, duct losses, and make-up air pressure losses, the actual flow rate is likely to be in the 200 - 300 CFM region. An 18-inch x 30-inch hood has an entry area of 3.75 square feet. At 90 CFM/sq.ft., the actual flow rate called for is ~ 340 CFM, requiring a motor rated at 500 CFM or higher, depending on myriad factors. And even if this is achieved, if the cooking plume is not entirely captured due to a smaller than needed hood aperture, there will still be grease, moisture, and odor escaping into the room.

Hello Houzz Community! I found this thread when Googling a similar topic. I'd like to replace my under cabinet hood with a wall mounted hood, and yes I know I have to remove the cabinet above the current hood which I'm fine with (see photo). My existing under cabinet hood vents out the wall to the side of my house - see photo, and note the vent is not blocked by those shrubs, there is space around it, you just can't tell from the angle of the photo :-) So my question is....can a wall mounted hood be installed to vent out the existing vent in the wall, or does a vent need to be created in the ceiling? Also, what type of professional can help answer any related questions I have about this? Would I ask the wall mounted vent manufacturer? Or a handyman? Thank you in advance for any guidance! I am a newbie homeowner and am learning as I go, so truly appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with me!
