Matte Black Bathroom Fixtures - Cleaning

Installed Matte Black fixtures in my master bath - they look beautiful but are showing every water spot - pretty disappointed I followed my designer's suggestions. Despite what others say, they do require more cleaning and show spots more easily. Does anyone know of a coating that can be applied to "bead up" the water, much like Rain-X for a windshield? TIA

We have really hard water. We have chrome in 1 bathroom and brushed nickel in 2 baths and the kitchen. The chrome looks water spotted and has been a disappointment from that standpoint. The brushed nickel NEVER shows water spots. Obviously, I'm sure they are present as well, but they absolutely don't show.
I'm seriously not interested in wiping down all my fixtures everytime they are used. Keeping up with life is hard enough without adding that to the list of chores.

Maybe you can spray them with a bit of Pledge in order to get the water to bead up.

Anything like that you add will take away the matt finish. Did you try it? I keep reading that matt black is easier and doesn't show water spots. What to believe...

In between thorough cleanings with dish detergent and water, you can keep glass tile looking good by using a glass cleaner or a solution of vinegar and water (half white vinegar and half water, sprayed on and wiped off). This is especially good for tiles in the bathroom, as these get covered with soap scum easily--the vinegar helps remove soap scum and mineral deposits.

Pittsburgh Paints Black Magic 518-7 mixed in their Accent Colors which only comes in Interior Matte Finish. I've used this paint in bathrooms several times. It is matte and it is a good fit for a bathroom. Truly, one of the very best options for black walls. Figuring out something with a black from Ben Moore in Aura would be second choice. ICI, now Azko-Nobel, has one of the truest blackest blacks called Dark Secret. Not sure what they're doing with their uber deep bases theses days - have to check it out at the store. I think it was Texashottie here on the forum (forget the name exactly) that ended up going with Dark Secret in her dining room. Her pix were fab. Be aware that this thing called water whitening can happen with all brands and grades - it's especially noticeable with super dark colors. Due to moisture, white streaks will develop, like the paint is running, and then disappear. They usually go away completely on their own over time. One day it just strikes you that it's gone. It's not surfacant leaching. It's different and again it should go away on it's own.

upon review of this thread we want to point out that there are varying types of black finishes - some are pitch dark black - and are powder coated - some are black or graphite and a plated - i.e dipped into chemicals - and plated with copper, nickel etc... - some black finishes will have a lacquer on it - a shiny or matt ...these black finishes vary greatly across different plumbing companies as they might be using different metal finishing companies (either in house or outsourced) - u could ask the manufacturer where the actual finishing is done and keep that information on file with you.

Katie, what did you end up buying? I'm considering the Kohl Purist collection for two bathrooms in either matte black or polished silver. I'm worried the black will be harder to keep clean and may be out of style sooner too.

I don't have any cleaning suggestions, but just wanted to thank you for acknowledging a problem with matte black fixtures! I suspected this would be a problem but so many people seem to say they are easy to care for. Always present water spots would drive me crazy so now I know not to go there.

uh, I disagree. I have matte black in my shower and above my sinks. they barely show anything. Much easier to keep clean the chrome in my spare bath!! way easier. I don't get any hard water desposits at all

It depends on the hardness of your water. Hard water spots up terribly.

But more than anything else? In my experience it spots up chrome and brushed nickel and everything else I've ever seen.

wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the water repellent mixture than to buy 3 different bottles of products, along w/a special spray bottle? The RainX stuff is only $3 or so.

or, if you really want to get cheap, get some simple carnauba wax and apply that to the black faucets. buff it till it's haze free. that too will repel water.
