Master Bathroom With Clean Lines and a Calming Vibe
Designers use concrete, wood and matte black to create a restful space for a Pennsylvania couple
The homeowners wanted a relaxing shower big enough for two instead of a tub. Levant used a well-edited material palette of large-format, concrete-look textured porcelain tile accentuated by matte black fixtures and other small details. A streamlined ledge for products extends across the width of the stall. A clear glass enclosure makes the shower feel larger and brighter.
Splurges and Savings
When balancing the budget, the designers splurged on plumbing fixtures. “An investment in this area is always a wise move considering the potential cost of having to replace inferior-quality products in this category,” Levant says.

The tile choice helped balance the budget. “The porcelain tile, which we used extensively in two textures for this bathroom, is a high-quality but modestly priced material,” Levant says. “We considered its cost effectiveness as well as its easy-care maintenance.” The concrete-like look works well as a contemporary and organic material.
Small-scale tile graces the shower floor. Its dark hue and straight lines complement the wall tile.
Tip: Small details count. This square drain in matte black is a small but important accent.

Before: The vanity area was not inviting and lacked counter space. The designers decided that this was the best location for the roomy shower stall.
Before: The room had a high vaulted ceiling and skylights, which gave it the potential for a nice airy feeling. However, the large whirlpool tub and surround occupied a tremendous amount of floor space and made the layout awkward. The new vanity now occupies this area.
Concentrated Storage
Across from the shower, a 118-inch-long vanity takes care of most of the homeowners’ storage needs without looking bulky. “Storage was a major concern of the client, so we worked to include a long vanity with medicine cabinets and six drawers for added storage,” Levant says. “We wanted storage options that allowed for items to be put away and not occupy much counter space.”
The vanity was too heavy to float off the wall, so the designers came up with a clever way to get a similar look. “The cabinetry area is built on a tiled platform to give it the appearance that it floats,” Levant says.

Six deep vanity storage drawers and a pair of Robern medicine cabinets provide all the storage the couple needs. With integrated outlets, the mirrored medicine cabinets offer a place to put things like electric razors and toothbrushes to keep them from cluttering the countertops.

Flanking the medicine cabinets are long cylindrical pendant lights with textured glass shades. The rectilinear vessel sinks play off the concrete-like tile.

“The use of concrete vessel sinks in this design visually punctuates the long vanity counter while also bringing the warmth of this organic material to the bathroom’s palette,” Levant says. “And the sinks help to create the feeling that the vanity is a furniture piece which functions as a centerpiece.”
Floor Plan
The toilet is neatly tucked next to the shower stall. It’s in the same spot as before the renovation. “Whenever we move a toilet location dramatically in an existing home, it needs to be considered carefully to minimize impact to other finished spaces below. Fortunately, in this case, it was already in the great place for our new bathroom layout, so we got lucky,” Levant says.

Bathroom at a Glance
Who uses it: A couple
Location: Wexford, Pennsylvania
Size: 135 square feet (13 square meters)
Designers: Lauren Levant and Paul Bentham of Lauren Levant Interior
These homeowners in Wexford, Pennsylvania, had a roomy master bathroom, but a large whirlpool tub took up most of the space. Kitchen and bathroom designers Lauren Levant and Paul Bentham helped the couple with a complete renovation.
To get an idea of their clients’ needs, the designers discussed organization preferences and lifestyle routines with them. As for style, they looked through inspiration photos, including a Houzz ideabook the clients had put together to illustrate their design preferences.
“We determined that we were after an organic, Zen-style spa bathroom that featured soft neutral colors and natural-looking materials,” Levant says. The end result is an airy, minimalist bathroom with clean lines, alluring textures and streamlined storage that gave the homeowners the calming vibe they wanted when unwinding at the end of the day.
