Looking at a house with HVAC ducting on the roof. How bad is this?

Hi- I’m in SoCal - the area I am in routinely gets into the 100s in the summer, lows in the mid 30s in winter.

Looking at a 1930s ranch house where the HVAC ducting is on the roof. It’s so, so ugly but I wonder if it’s a horror show for the energy bills as well since the AC ducts are outside in hot weather.

What do you think? And also, is there any way to replace this? It’s a 2300 sqft house - the ducts must be on the roof because there’s not much of an attic. A lot of the house is an addition with a big room with vaulted ceilings. In a house this big, is mini split even a good option? I just hate how it looks on the roof and I worry about the energy costs.
