Secret vs. Tiffany vs. Francis Meilland?
Comments (11)I think Francis Meilland is your best bet. I rate roses by beauty and bs resistance, and FM rates high in those categories--and is more pastel , which you desire. Tiffany is a lovely rose and bs resistant, but a medium and rather bright pink. Not what I would call "pale pink" at all. I don't know Secret, but helpmefind.com shows pics ranging from a lovely pastel pink edged whitish rose to a medium shade. Might sometimes be a darker color than you want--perhaps depending on amount of sun and temperatures? Don't know for sure, but I saw an on-going discussion there about Secret not liking heat but not performing that well if it is planted in partial shade, so I would have questions about that one--though a lot of rave reviews from this forum might banish my doubts. Whichever one you pick, all three are truly lovely and seemingly disease-resistant roses, so you probably can't go very wrong with any of them. Kate...See MoreMaybe more blooms on Francis Meilland
Comments (11)Thank you Pat and Jim. Pat, I think you would love it! If anyone could get it to bloom, you could, your roses are so prolific. I really do think there is something about the spot I planted mine that has prevented it from blooming more, since Firefighter is in the same bed, and has had similar issues, but they are both improving. Come to think of it, I've been wondering about my Pope John Paul II, which is in that bed too, and blooms okay, but is kind of a runt compared to the ones I've seen in pictures, I love it too, but also wish it was more vigorous....See MoreWhich rose house: Jackson & Perkins, Weeks, Austin, Kordes, Meilland..
Comments (19)Goodness, Moses! You really spurred on my curiosity! I went through and counted all my roses and their breeders to find the winner and it's exactly as I thought. I could have saved myself some trouble! ; ) The top spot was close with Kordes followed by Austin and then Weeks if I count the distributor and Pemberton if I'm looking at the breeder. Weeks' breeders were evenly split between Bedard and Carruth. The rest are all onsies twosies withe Meilland at three, Boerner, Lambert, Turbot, LeVavasseur, Shoup, Basye, Bentall and Buck all coming in at two a piece. I do look at Breeders and hope to grow my collection of Jerabek and Bagnasco roses and try some of the Lens Hybrid Musks. I would think being bred in Belgium where I barely recall the sun shining, that they would be healthier. Although, I hardly associate England with year-round sun. I do really like my Kordes roses that I've had for three seasons. They have really changed in terms of blooming with the exception of Fire Opal which was a winner from the get go. With the exception of Munstead Wood and Molineux, my Austins were cheap impulse buys from Lowe's. I'm happy with them, but do feel they would prefer a slightly more acidic soil, much like the Pembertons. The Weeks roses mainly came from a Springhill Rainbow of Roses sale and they are none too healthy in terms of Black spot. We'll see if they improve next year. They do bloom alot, however. I've been meaning to do this, so thanks for the push! ; )...See MoreFrancis Meilland-where to plant-full sun or part shade
Comments (28)Carol, como estas, amigo? There should be an upside down question mark at the beginning of that sentence. Many moons ago, I could speak some Spanish, but, sadly that language has slowly disappeared from my aged brain. You need people to converse with who are fluent to keep up your skills, which I didn't have, though if I had some get up and go, I might enjoy practicing a little Spanish even now. Clare knows some Spanish, but I think she'd run from me if wanted to practice. And my friend, Nancy, spent several months with a Central American family, trying to hone her Spanish skills. She does not have good facility for language, but was always trying to learn them, partly because she traveled everywhere. I really admired her efforts, but sadly, Italian and French were a bust, too. I don't think she'd like to practice Spanish with me, either. Jennifer I don't know anything about Francis' growth habits, but if those were two Austins planted together that closely in my garden, SW Idaho, zone 7, they would eat each other alive, except maybe, Munstead Wood. Mine have gotten quite large but are kind to their mutual neighbor, Twilight Zone. The Meilland roses I grow are pretty big, too, but I don't grow many. I love them, though. Kitty, do you parlez with Anastasia? Diane...See MoreLauraLG Z5b-NwPA
