Need your advice on dining room update!

Hi! I’m looking to update our dining room/living room and need some advice/direction. The colors and pieces are dated for me and I want to freshen it up and not afraid to change colors. We have some older pieces - dining table/chairs, China hutch, buffet and small bar table. I’d like to start by trying to repaint vs. replace if possible. I know repainting is a big job but I’ve done other pieces successfully. I’d like to start with the dining table/chairs in a General Finishes antique white or Snow White. Also the same for the hutch/buffet? And possibly curtains for the living room window? Other ideas or different direction are welcome!

Repainting is a great way to save money. If you're up for the challenge, that's wonderful! Here are some thoughts to consider:
- If you're thinking about putting a rug in the dining room, I would decide on that first. It could drive other color choices.
- I think white for the table would be a good contrast with the floor.
- Personally, I would paint the upper walls next after the table. The chair rail and moldings below would feel more updated if the whole wall is white. If you were to redo the whole wall (along with moldings and chair rail) in a different color --gray, taupe, or tobacco maybe?-- that could be another step forward. Since your table will be white, a different wall color would set it off as well.
- After those changes, and possibly drapes with a pattern (buffalo plaid?), then I would reevaluate whether you want to paint the other dining room pieces.

Thanks everyone. I actually can't believe I hadn't thought of using that rug in there before. bmallon - I wasn't sure if the sideboard was too fru-fru with the flowers and all. I have some ideas, so I run them by you all when I get the chance. I'm feeling pretty good about the chair pads too. It's funny, but with the old oriental rug, they seemed off to me - but with this one, they really do work! I'm thrilled.

You’re right, it’s a big fireplace - we have considered taking out that high hearth when we install the floor. We use the gas fireplace when we lose power - the current snow makes that a possibility. You can see the breakfast area and our screened porch off this room.

Wow! Very good job! And now you have everything at your fingertips! And know where things are! Huge improvement! If you enjoy seeing the instruments on the shelfs, that’s your reward for all this great work. And it keeps some fairly open space too. You could hang on walls as art as Calidesign mentioned above. But somehow I think on the shelfs will help you keep shelves in order. But certainly a personal choice! My only wish, is we could hear some music from you!!!
