I feel dumb for asking but....what is butcher paper?

Is it the same thing as freezer paper? {blush}

Not a dumb question at all. I think butcher paper is like kraft paper. Some butcher paper may be different, but my own experience has been it's not good for freezing. I haven't bought freezer paper but am thinking it has some type of wax coating or composition that's more suited to freezing. The butcher paper my meat/poultry gets wrapped in does not have a wax coating.

Again, just basing on personal experience. Freezer paper seems be a better choice.

^^ 100% correct! Kraft or butcher paper are pretty synonymous and can be either bleached (white) or natural colored (tan). Freezer paper has at least one side that is plasticized or waxed to prevent stickage.

I have several of the smaller, colored, hybrids in the ground - they come back pretty reliably as far as being there. I have to admit that I didn't water this summer as much as I should/could have (I am on a well, but....), so the blooms weren't great. However, considering the size of the bulbs (corms, tubers, ?) when planted and when I dug one up this spring, forgetting that there already WAS something in that spot, they are obviously thriving. With some extra mulching, I would think that yours would do the same in the ground. Of course, if you LIKE them in pots, you can also do that with them...., but I would protect them from hard freezes, whether in an unheated shed/garage or in your greenhouse. While the un-improved, plain white one will grow in water - and probably not like to be in freezing water - they would also grow as a weed in sandy soil in San Francisco (where you had BETTER want them where you planted them, because you would only with assiduous efforts get all the bits of root, and thus all the sprouts, out of the soil after several years if you changed your mind about location) - the other, colored, hybrids, can thrive in drier conditions, but don't like to be soggy.

I have not read the rest of this thread, just this most recent post, but I got 1/4 beef last week. The cow was apparently on the smaller side, at 610 pounds, so we paid our price per pound based on 1/4 of this total weight, so our portion was 152.5 pounds. We buy through a small local store, so our price per pound includes cut and wrap and everything in one number. We have 36, one pound packs of ground beef, about 18 pounds of stew, stir fry and cubed steaks, 10 pounds of steaks (we opted for rib roast for Christmas rather than rib steaks, and we chose to have more other roasts than steaks, so our steaks are NY strip, top sirloin, tenderloin and tri-tip), about 30 pounds of roasts and 6 pounds of "soup bones". I told them I wanted a share of the organs, they just left it for me to work out with the store, I think it depends what the other buyers want, but you should be entitled to a share of the organs. I'm not sure why, and we didn't get this before, but they also packaged about 25 pounds of bones and 18 pounds of "beef scrap". I have not gotten these when we've gotten beef before, even last year through this same place. Maybe it's because we discussed the organs being for the dogs (though I declined "dog bones" ) but I wanted soup bones, I really don't know. I'm going to thaw a pack of the scrap and see if it's feasible to cook that for the dogs, but I may also share it with my neighbor who hopes to have a deer to process this fall. Anyway, I just had to throw in that last part because all of this, including the 43 pounds of stuff we've not gotten before, fit in 3 cardboard boxes. Heavy boxes, but still will fit in the car with no problem. I think without the extras, it would have been pretty close to fitting in just 2 boxes.

From time to time at Hallmark Card stores at the checkout counters in this area they have small pocket angels. They are about the size of a nickel and are made of some type of metal. I don't know if they are actually called pocket angels at Hallmark, but that's what they were called at the store where I bought some a few years ago that wasn't a Hallmark store. I'm sorry I don't remember what store I purchased those from, but I have definitely seen them at Hallmark since then. If you don't have a Hallmark in your area, maybe you can purchase a small charm that is used for a charm bracelet. I'll bet they have four leaf clovers or crosses or angels. That is sweet of you to do that. I'll keep your sister in law in my thoughts so that she may safely get through this. Linda

Butcher block w/Waterlox finish...not what I expected

Thanks for all of your input. I've discovered what was in the container that came along with my countertop - mineral oil. Which explains why the countertops have not performed up to my expectations. After talking to my contractor and the fabricator, I believe the breakdown in communication was with the office staff of the contractor who actually placed the order for the top. They did not specify a waterlox finish that I had emphatically requested. So...my contractor has agreed to refinish the tops himself with waterlox. During this discovery process, I talked to the man who owns the company that made my countertops. He said the process to re-do the finish would be to go over the wood with mineral spirits a couple of times to draw out the oil as much as possible (I have not added any more oil). Go over the wood with a fine grit sandpaper to smooth the roughness and then proceed with the waterlox application. One coat per day. Can anyone who has experience with this process give me advice? Will these steps be enough to get a professional finish on the tops? I am disappointed that I will not be able to finish the undersides of the counters because they are already bolted down to the cabinets. I am afraid that may cause problems down the road. Any input from experienced users of waterlox would be greatly appreciated!!

Absolutely true what Gardengal said about and in addition to what Chloebud said, but that's what "butcher paper" means. What the butcher actually uses nowadays isn't always "butcher paper" and may be more like a thin freezer paper or something a little else, which confuses the issue.

Here, butcher paper is a lot like unprinted newsprint paper, maybe a little heavier. Always white. Fish and chips are also wrapped in butcher paper. It comes in reams of large sheets about 24" x 18". A lot of parents buy it for children to draw on, or you can use it for a meeting flip chart.

When I get butchered quality meats it is a planned fresh cooked meal...not for the freezer. Always in a wrapped 'butcher paper'. Not sure why so many varieties exist. Most likely different ones are for serving and coated ones for taking home juicy meats. No leaking if in the fridge for a day or two.

If I freeze a portion, it gets food savered, no air.

Ah, that link was helpful. So what I'm looking for is actual freezer paper to store meats in.

I agree, if you want to freeze meats, you want actual freezer paper, not butcher paper. My frozen items all get vacuum packed, as that lasts longer than just wrapping in freezer paper and I can't use a whole cow in a couple of months, LOL.

Be aware if you are wrapping your own meat, not all tape sticks to the freezer paper either, regular "freezer" tape is more reliable. I've also wrapped meat in plastic wrap or a plastic bag then in freezer wrap to extend the storage length.

Just thinking of freezer paper makes me smile, we used to wrap venison in it when I was a kid, we processed our own. Mother used to buy chocolate bunnies on sale after Easter, wrap them in freezer paper and label them "liver", then freeze them. They were then put them in the next year's Easter basket. We never noticed...
