Is this counter top too unique??
Comments (36)GoRavens.... 1. Ab.so.lute.ly! love the stones shown on the MotW website. I'm more partial to the cooler palate but both are examples are spectacular. 2. The stone on CL, I like it also, but unless you can use the greater majority of the slab in one piece (because of the way the colors 'zone') then I think you will have a slightly minimized wow factor. 3. I've looked at similar stones but for an accent wall in a walk-in shower. I know....huge overkill...and way out of my budget. But a girl can dream right? 4. For me, the stone screams contemporary so as such, I would want to see it in a more contemporary/modern/euro sort of kitchen design. 5. I would like to see it be a focal point piece for use on an island or as a backsplash behind the cooktop, making sure it was beautifully lit regardless of the location. So there is my 2.5-cents worth of feedback. Pepper ~ Granite installed yesterday. :-)...See MoreHelp in choosing counter top material!!!!!!
Comments (94)Every choice has pluses and minuses, in the end you have to choose which plus and which minus matters the most to you and/or which have an easy fix (like using a cutting board under the crockpot; at work we have an extra piece under the big coffeemaker). budget mattered a lot to me (and I hated formica) so, I ended up with a lesser expensive granite and am very happy, no sealing or extra work for the stone I chose. I had formica previously which looked like h#*! from the day I moved in and didn't get better (except that I could use bleach to remove stains) so those of you whose formica looks like new after 30 years must be taking appropriate care -- using cutting boards (mine had little cuts all over) and so forth -- where my previous owners did not. But, I read that formica now is much better quality than what was installed 30 or 40 years ago. I looked at Burled Beach and liked it. It looked a warm sand-ish color on my samples in my house, but I saw a demo kitchen of it at a big box store and it was a warm greenish tone (I still liked it) under their fluorescent lights. You always have to ability to STOP and make changes unless the cabinets are all already made. If he is just now starting it might not be too late -- call him now! PS do you have an IKEA near to you? Most counter materials are less expensive there....See MoreSilestone countertop worries after templating, help?
Comments (21)jesslake: You were correct - I was wrong about the diagonal seams. I got the paperwork back from them and saw they are actually vertical - sorry for my mistake! kathryn p: this is the response I got from them: ". My recommendation is to leave the seams as they are. They are currently placed strategically to avoid breakage of the countertops as your home and cabinets settle over time. All foundations and cabinets shift over time as the ground beneath settles, and having seams placed on either side of the dishwasher and sink help alleviate pressure on the stone during that process. If at any point this happens to your countertops, you simply call Stoneworks to come out and reset the seam, just like during the first installation! However, if we removed or moved the seams, during that same settling process the stone can crack and break, especially in those high traffic areas like dishwashers and sinks." So they kinda make it sound like if I don't use their seam recommendation, then they won't come back out to "reset the seam"....See MoreLaundry Room Countertop Ideas
Comments (30)Nhb, that's a great thought... I'd actually be interested in a similar material (copper). :-) I know copper develops a patina -- what some folks would consider a negative -- but that's part of its charm for me. Stainless gives off a very industrial/sterile vibe, so you'd have to be careful using it, from an aesthetics point of view (in my opinion, of course, which you may or may not value, lol). Regarding operational negatives, I'd have to think it dents/scratches easily? Well, "easily" compared with a stone, anyway.......See MoreMoira L
