Comments (9)These pictures are far better than anything I have found. Thank you. We have a cathedral ceiling in our living room now. The problem is that we have 8' ceilings in our kitchen, dining room and family room which form a big "L" shape. We have no other skylights in the house except for what will go into the kitchen. -I am thinking tray ceiling in the family room. It is smaller than the kitchen. It will have a beam as we are removing a load bearing wall to open it up to the dining room. -I was thinking of keeping the 8' ceiling in the dining room as it a smaller space and it would be cozy there. (We also will have a beam between the kitchen & the dining room as we are removing another load bearing wall.) -The kitchen it some what large (14.5'w x 20.5'L) (14.5'x33' if you include the dining room). We only have one small window over the sink on the far end of kitchen. The dining room at the opposite end has floor to ceiling windows on two sides. I would love to get away with no skylights, but my architect said it would help the kitchen a lot. I guess from the opinions thus far, I should go with cathedral and junk the tray. If budget becomes an issue stick with just 8'? Let me know if anyone else has any ideas. This is really helpful!...See MoreFireplace with cathedral ceiling dilemma
Comments (10)Thanks everyone! Palimpsest - I agree, the styles are so different. The overall style of the house is not rustic, but I think if done correctly we could possibly pull off either one. Photo 2 is probably closest to the overall style of the whole house, with the warmer colors of photo 3. But the rustic mantel is really going to lean us a lot more in that direction overall since it is such a focal point. I don't disagree the mantel in the first one is too formal for the stacked stone, just trying to find something that compromises the two I can live with. nini804 - I think the photo 3 shows a "dressier" stone that I could live with. I've seen something very similar in a parade home in our area that I liked ok. I agree - part of it is I'm totally over this look because it is so ubiquitous and I am not really into trendy at all. Although many of our choices are going to scream 2015 I'm sure, I'm trying to channel timeless as much as I can. Beams - original plan was to have two simple stained beams, although again to have a more polished look, not rough and rustic. Not sure yet if we are going to do them now, add them later, or wait and see how it comes together. mshahmd - thanks so much, great pic! I'd love to see photos of what you ended up doing if you have them! glad to know we aren't the only ones : ) zorro - have you already posted pics of your place on the build thread? I'll check it out if so. This room has our best views and also has a lot of windows, including 2 large ones flanking fireplace similar to what you describe...See MoreFireplace not lined up with ceiling vault
Comments (14)There is much more info required to make a good decision than what is presented here. So your FP is existing, and you've removed all of a flat stick-built ceiling? There are some critical structural things associated with doing that. Is this ridge and rafters going to be just faux, or are you using existing? Having a vault be "asymmetrical" (differing slopes on each side) may not be problematic design-wise here, because the vault is not too steep or tall and the adjacent room is a shed vault. Other things like the openings and windows (which I see none) play into noticing an asymmetrical vault being out-of-place. Don't forget the added cost and whether you can even hang a false ceiling to offset the ridge location. You should have your architect involved with this. Edited after reading your edited post: Not sure about the kitchen cabinets/appliance shifting, but you should have the correct info (ref is different location in plan and elevation) and where you are at in ordering cabinets to get good advice....See MoreBill Doherty
