Help! Need advice on 1950's bathroom tile & tub/shower
Comments (21)Thank you everyone for all of your replies! Sorry for the absence...I have no internet here at the house yet. In response to questions/comments: kudzu9: There are areas of the grout that are missing, and the remainder has turned yellow. I would like to replace the missing grout and whiten the yellowed. We hope to rent out the home, so I don't trust tenants to wipe down painted walls. I'm hoping to find a complementary alternative. benjesbride: Unfortunately, the reason I have little budget now is that most of the original plumbing has to be redone. The drains are all old cast iron, and have degraded...there are lead pipes too. So, since they are replacing them, I figure that now would be the time to relocate. Thank you for your advice on "embracing the retro" and your link! nosoccermom: I cant really remove the shower head, as its the only bath in the home. I LOVE your idea of glass, and will research it. Have to figure out how to seal it from moisture and how to make area where it meets tile waterproof. Fori is not pleased: LOL!!!! I'm not pleased either! Thanks for the laugh and suggestion. I will def head over there once I have internet at the house, and am ready to make all the decorating decisions.polly929: I had considered having a company reglaze the tub & tile white, but the many opinions of keeping the original intact have made me reconsider. I am keeping the home, but am trying to fix it up to rent out for now. bpathome: Thanks for sharing your experience. I was considering adding 4x4 tile above the existing, but someone else said it wouldn't look good and hearing your experience too really gives me pause. I agree that the glass sounds like a cool possibility, but I need to research the installation issues. Would wallpaper hold up in a shower??? Yes, I absolutely need to redo the floor. Its a pier and beam home, so I am avoiding any real tile. However, I have looked at black & white LVT alternatives in both the hex and penny. jesshs: That is amazing! I cannot believe someone on here has actually had this tile! And its funny you mentioned grey....that is exactly the color I was thinking of going with on the walls! As far as paint on the shower walls, as I said above to kudzu9, we are planning to rent the home out and I worry about tenants taking the time to do that sort of maintenance. I want to go with something I don't have to worry about them taking care of. cpartist: Another retro vote! I'm coming around :) The grout is yellowed, and missing in a few areas. I'm hoping there is a way to bring it back to white. I agree with you, and everyone else, about the grab bars, as well as the shower head. And so glad to get another grey vote! I am absolutely redoing the floor. Just haven't decided what would go best. Again, THANK YOU everyone for your opinions and suggestions. Please, keep the ideas coming!...See MoreBathroom with a freestanding bathtub, no shower??
Comments (11)Devils advocate here because it happened to my brother's family recently. They live in an older neighborhood in a small college town in East Texas. The neighborhood is very desirable though, and property resale values stable, even with the new subdivisions springing up. They recently moved for Jobs and put sold their home. It had been updated cosmetically throughout. A large utility room had an enclosed acrylic shower they had redone in tile as well as the rest of the room updated. The hall bath had been a tub only when they purchased 10 years ago, but was short. They tore it out, shortened the 2 sink vanity to 1 sink, and put in a long, free standing tub on a base. The master bath is small with a double vanity, shower only with the toilet right next to it. They retiled the shower and did other cosmetic updates. All these updates were done 5-6 years ago. When the house went on the market, there was a big open house. Many buyers made comments that they did not like the shower only in the master while others didn't like the tub only feature in the hall bath. Needless to say, it was not an issue for many other buyers and there was a bidding war over the home and it sold very quickly. Do not remodel for what will work for someone else. It is not their home. They have their own home to do with what pleases them. If having a bath only bathroom works for you and your lifestyle, then by all means do that. How often do you have guests? Are you like a B & B or is it just an occasional person every few years? If a guest has a problem using a tub, they have an option down the hall. If that is too inconvenient for them as a guest in your home, there is always a hotel. Someone that high maintenance in your home may not be worth the hassle....See MorePossible to fit shower & tub into smallish bathroom?
Comments (9)Thank you roarah and benjesbride. Roarah, agree the opening is inspiration picture is narrrow, we would want a 24" opening, which I think is possible: 36" width for tub, 24" opening" , 38" for glass wall which should be sufficient to keep most water out. Could have a curb too. Is 36" width for a tub unrealistic I wonder? benjesbride, I can move the door but it would disrupt the layout of the hall, so I prefer to avoid it if possible. But something to consider for sure. This bathroom would be primarily used by a now 9 year old boy and only occasionally by guests. We have ample linen storage elsewhere. I'm thinking I might be able to get away with something like this for the vanity, although I would at least 36" to comfortable stand in front of vanity. :...See MoreBathroom vanity and shower/tub design dilemma
Comments (9)I think a much smaller vanity would be really terrific! I have strange bathroom dimensions too, and there was this odd custom vanity that was meant to maximize storage. After much, much deliberation and agonizing about losing storage space, I finally decided to get rid of the old vanity and just get a smaller one -- and now I'm really glad I did. Mine is only 24" x 18" deep, and it's got three drawers so I can still fit major necessities in there. And we found a little floor-standing metal shelving unit at our local Homesense (like a Marshalls) which is absolutely perfect -- it provides extra storage space right next to the new vanity; it can be easily pulled away for quick cleaning and it helps lend an openness/airiness to the otherwise-cramped space. I think a 36" (or wider if it fits easily) x 18" vanity can look great in your space! Here's an example from Home Depot, although if you're getting yours custom made you could add drawers etc: If you go with a smaller vanity, then you could also put a "rolling storage bath shelf" like this one beside it, which would solve some of the problems you identified including being able to access for cleaning: :)...See MoreJesse Fay
