Neat. That's large enough to be considered a dressing room, I think. Since I struggle with a 42" x 14" closet, I'm really happy for you to get that space. I think the first thing you need to do is look at the clothes that you have. How many feet of hanging space will you need? Double rods will save a lot of space, but that depends on how you hang trousers and such--by the hem with those clamp hangers, or folded over a hanger? How much long hanging space will you need for long dresses and skirts and coats? Given that you will have more hanging space than you did before, what do you have folded in drawers now, that you will be hanging in the new closet? You might do a consultation or two with a closet company or the closet designer at a home store. They will have the knowledge of specialized storage units that would work well for you. My first instinct is to do double rods on the 12' wall, a single rod on the 5' wall, with shelves above everything. (I'd put all the out of season clothing at the window end of the closet.) Then go wild with shelves and drawers on the 8' wall. Put a full length mirror on the wall that the door opens against, and a bench or stool somewhere to sit down and put on shoes. I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that.. The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet. The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window. Hopefully someone will give you other ideas. The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet. Each square equals 1 foot.

I think my closet plans fall into the range of "real people". Most of us don't have Oprah-sized closets or the number of shoes owned by -- is that Mariah Cary? Most of us -- even if we had the space -- wouldn't install a custom island topped with granite. After all, as lovely as these spaces are, they're closets. Here's my inspiration picture -- though at 7' wide x 8' long, my new house closet will be a little bigger than this one: Specifics that matter to me -- obviously, you'll have way more space and will be able to have more: - 3' of walking space down the middle of two aisles. - A pretty light in the middle of the space ... and maybe a couple canned lights on the edges. This is, of course, not important in terms of function, but I want a bit of fancy in the closet. - Since I am only 4'11", I will shorten my hanging clothes area. I want matching hangers. - Plenty of folded space -- we are on the cusp of retirement and won't need lots of dress clothes. Plus we want no dresser in the bedroom, so we want space for EVERYTHING in the closet. - A couple built-in drawers for unmentionables. - Space for roughly 30 pair of shoes for me, 10 pair for him -- plus several pairs of boots for the two of us -- but our footwear doesn't need to be showcased as if they were something special. - A few attractive baskets up top for "boxing up" traveling items, purses, out of season items, etc.... and a planned space for a step stool since I want to access those baskets. - My inspiration pix shows wallpaper on the back wall, but I'll probably paint something pretty with a stencil. I have a round mirror, which I plan to repurpose on the back wall ... and I want a shelf underneath it, which can hold jewelry, etc. - A fluffy rug in the middle of the closet. - A valet rod on each side of the closet for "hanging out" church clothes. - One narrow "open locker" at the doorway on each side ... with a couple hooks. This will be for clothes that we plan to wear again ... a once-worn nightgown, workout clothes, or jeans. This'll keep them separate from the "completely clean clothes".

I'd say the window locations are fine. With the closets, one way to make a room feel a tad bit larger is opening up the area next to the door. The rooms are standard size, but every little bit helps. So make the closet length shorter to maximize "vestibule" area coming into room. A downside is most people just love symmetry, and the closet door would not be centered on the bumpout. Another thing to realize about having "dead space" inside the ends of the closet, is you should have about 24" of wing wall where a dresser or nightstand would go, so they do not interfere with the door openings (which is where the non-symmetry comes in). I'm not sure what you expect to gain by changing closet locations, but did a copy/paste to show you. I believe I have the queen beds to scale. The room sizes are essentially the same. Toss-up. In both schemes I reduced the Linen closet to just a 16" shelf with flush wall to gain 8" in the hallway. Maximizing open space there seems beneficial.
