Fungus Gnats are driving me nuts !!!!
Comments (50)This situation requires a 3 part approach: you need to kill the larvae in the soil, the adult gnats (who promptly lay more eggs to become larvae) and remove or correct the conditions that results in the gnat infestation in the first place. 1) Larvae control. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective control. Use 3% hp at 1 part hp to 4 parts water. Wait until the soil dries a bit then water thoroughly with this solution. 2) Adult control. Adults have a very short lifespan - only 7-10 days - but during this period, females are constantly laying eggs. Covering the soil surface with a layer of coarse sand will discourage females from laying eggs on the container soil. No eggs = no larvae = no adults. 3) Finally, you need to adjust watering practices. Fungus gnats are attracted to consistently damp soils. Generally, populations will be most heavy if the plants are being watered too frequently and the soil not allowed to dry out between waterings. At least the top two inches should dry thoroughly between waterings. The females won't lay eggs on dry soils (what the sand fools them into thinking) and the shallow larvae will not survive in dry conditions. Your houseplants will probably thank you for it as well - more issues arise with overwatering houseplants than allowing them to become too dry. Cinnamon can help as well. Dusting the top of the container uniformly with ground cinnamon will destroy the fungal organisms the larvae feed on, killing them as well. Also useful for damping off problems. But you must address all three parts of the problem to have successful control....See MoreHelp Me! Clematis driving me nuts!
Comments (7)BabyWatson..you didn't say which ones you have...I am assuming they are pruning group 2s which can be finicky and slow to get started..Might I suggest you try the Viticellas..the pruning group 3s..sounds like you are doing everything right..but I find that all these sites that say full sun can be misleading..especially for warmer zones like myself..they can grow just beautifully in 6 hours of sun and therefore my best ones get the morning sun and shaded from the hot evening sun..those I have in more intense sun need watering more...they can also just disappear...wilt?..and then pop back up with more vigor..it's all about their root system..if it does wilt..just prune back to the ground..but don't forget to keep watering if nothing is there...Jeanne ps..I can't grow Fuschia either..too hot here...trust me I have killed about 3 trying to grow them...I either overwater or something.......See MoreMy Toto toilet hums and it's driving me nuts.
Comments (10)water fill noise can make a reverberating sound, but that usually occurs during the flush/fill cycle. If it's continuing after the water flow has stopped, it may be the fan. There's usually a way to turn the fan off through the setting menu. Most practical way would be to turn the features off one at a time. Fan, seat heater, water heater, etc. That may help isolate. Some washlets have an over-sensitive sensor. As soon as the door is open, it starts a heating/fan cycle, etc. I know a few folk who have disabled or reduced it's sensitivity with tape....See MoreHelp! Disposal sheild driving me NUTS!
Comments (56)I work in the plumbing industry and sell garbage disposers. I've heard of this issue with multiple brands of disposers (non-batch feed type.) At first I thought it was due to a poor venting system after customer switched to a single bowl versus an old double bowl sink, since water is able to drain more rapidly with the 2nd drain venting air. I believe this could still be a factor, but have learned that most manufacturers have made their baffle more stiff and with a smaller center hole. The easy way to fix this problem is to simply cut the hole in the baffle a little larger or cut one section off the baffle. This will allow the air flow and water to drain. I do not recommend to remove the baffle completely because it does have a purpose: to help keep unwanted items from falling into the sink, to prevent debris flying out of the disposer while in use and also to deaden the sound....See More- 3 years ago
