Help! size/orientation of couch in long narrow space

Hi all! I am closing on my first home in a little less than a month and I’m so excited!

The rooms I’ll probably spend the most time in are the kitchen + family room (they are open to each other). However, I am finding it challenging to pick the right size couch for the family room.

The family room is long and narrow, and I think it only makes sense to put the TV on the narrow wall above the fireplace. My first though is to buy an L-shaped sectional couch that is short on the side facing the TV, and long against the wall.

But it seems like such an awkward setup to have the majority of the couch facing into the kitchen instead of facing the TV + fireplace.

Any advice? I am open-minded to any furniture setup or suggestions; an L-shape sectional facing the TV was just the most obvious thought that came to mind.

Do you have another living room or is this the only room with a TV? How many people will be watching TV in this family room? Seems to me you could use comfy chairs and maybe a game table in this room instead of a couch..would that work? Depending if you have another living room with a TV. Also consider how high the TV will be over the fireplace for comfortable viewing. Might consider putting TV on wall where the blue couch is now. Chairs facing the TV acting as a separation between family room and kitchen. A bonus is that you could see the TV from the kitchen. Congrats on new home.

I don’t see that space as a family room, even though the builder tried to pass it off as one.

Dining area? Yes! Choose seating which provides watching both the t v and enjoying the fireplace? Yes!

Consider a left facing banquette.

You will get a sofa (effect) on the long wall and seating facing the t v/fireplace.

If you purchase swivel counter stools, those, too, could join in. Odd design, but very workable.

Perfect space to watch Super Bowl. Go Brady, GOAT 12!

Eld Thanks for your advice. These were taken during the day but it was a gloomy day. The windows are large but with the balance and thickness of the curtains they limit the light in. Those windows do face the front of our house so I do want to be mindful of that. I thought slate because it pulls in the color from the fireplace. And I think I’d prefer to not have an accent wall in this room.

I can’t read your measurement, so counted the squares as one foot each. There are a few options for furniture arrangement, but I think purchasing a sectional will be a one way street for you…go with a sofa, or two sofas facing each other and two chairs side by side facing the fireplace.

Hmmm. It looks to me like you are planning to buy two lounge chairs and put a round table between them. Instead, I would buy 2 swivel chairs, and eliminate putting a round table between them so you can easily swivel the chairs all the way around to face the windows. In each window I would put a chaise lounge that has bench storage. I'd put the two chaise lounges facing each other. The idea here is that the kids can sit in the lounges and read by the windows of they like, and have conversations with whoever is sitting in the swivel chairs. here's my idea for an affordable stain resistant swivel chair Here's some storage chaises at the opposite end of the room I'd build one long activity table, wall to wall, something very simple. I'd add chairs for the kids so they could sit and draw, or do puzzles. I'd put shelves and cubbies nearby for them to put their stuff away. trellis curtains maybe this rug

Here is the current layout. Where the TV is now is going to be a fireplace in the near future. I have this as the focal point for the sofas at the moment, but because the room is so long there is a bit of empty space behind it. I have a console table back there currently. Wondering about added a shelf or plantstand or hanging plant, or just wall art to balance the room. Thinking also of hanging curtains as well. Will update again when the fireplace is finished. Planning to get rid of the tall lamp and replace it with a new one soon.
