Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Master bathroom remodel- need advise on floor selections

Hi all! We are remodeling our master bathroom, and I need some advise as to what to use on the floor. The space is about 10x10 and the walk in shower is 72'x45". I am using 4x12 white subway tiles in the shower and hopefully some sort of hex/ mosaic on the shower floor (color depends on what I pick for the main bathroom floor). I am re-using my 72" double sink vanity which is a java color and replacing the vanity top with a white quartz top although have not made my final selection. Currently I have white square tiles on the floor and I despise them The show every hair, dust etc. I should also mention I have 2 windows that get the afternoon sun.

I was thinking I wanted to put some type of wood plank porcelain tile in there but was wondering if the look is dated?? What is your opinion?

Also my house colors lean more to the warm side....not really much gray....more greige type; cool browns, blacks and whites

I say go for it! We put it in two of our bathrooms and have been very pleased with it. We also have all warm tones in our home.

There are so many beautiful tiles and patterns to lay them, which will highly contribute to the overall feel. Before deciding, suggest purchasing (and returning) a box of wood planks and one or two tiles you are drawn to. Consider your shower tiles as well, to be sure they all work together.

For what it's worth, we chose Hot Spring Stones for my daughter's room, as she wanted the greige too. It's more beige than gray. It's the lightest one on a three color chip, but you could always have them lighten it up a bit. I painted a revere pewter sample on our bedroom wall, and it's very light. In my daughter's room, it's darker, with a bluish undertone depending on the time of day - too gray and drab. Many of the grays are going to have the blue undertone, and many that lean more toward beige are going to have that rosy undertone! The Revere Pewter was much prettier in my room. But, my husband vetoed it, adamant about wanting a more true blue in there. Good luck.

olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? I would do a search here for the following terms: "marble on shower floors" "marble stains" "iron stains in marble" "marble not drying" If you do a bit of reading, the common result you will see, is that marble is not the best product to use for shower floors or walls. My master bath was all done with tile from Walker Zanger, but I used their porcelain and glass tiles for products that are durable and easy to clean. I am willing to squeegee the whole shower after I use it, but not something that my husband or kids would do, so products have to be chosen with all family members in mind. I am now doing 3 more bathrooms, but went with a competitor of WZ in my area, as they have many of the same product lines, but had better pricing.

Hire a designer. Designing is more than pretty finishes. You have to draw out a floor plan, elevatiins, electrical locations, material choice specifications that meet ANSI and TCNA specifications. Plumbing configurations that meet local regulations and specific use needs. There’s a lot that has to be researched and documented. Its months of DIY work to do it correctly. Or, hire a designer. For instance, that vanity is designed to be freestanding, with open space on both sides. It isn’t a suitable choice to go between walls in an alcove installation. It will also be a pain to keep the diet, dust, and cat toys, out from underneath.

Maureen, I agree, there are so many beautiful tiles!! I find myself overwhelmed. Most all of the pictures I “save” have wood plank floors. This is currently what I’m thinking of. Thoughts??

The subway tile is a matte white which will go on the shower walls and the small hexagons are for the shower floor. The wood planks are for the bathroom floor..these are my cabinets

Your bathroom is not that big - It's about the size of the master bath I recently remodeled. I used the same tile for the shower floor and bathroom floor in order to not chop up the space. Even if not identical I would think a tile that didn't contrast as much would create more of an illusion of space.

I do agree that there are a multitude of tiles and choosing among so many beautiful options is hard. I went for a period look with marble basket weave tile but my inspiration photos truly ran the gamut. In my next life I wouldn't mind a full on mid-century modern look :-)

The choices look lovely together; I like the lighter planks so bathroom doesn’t feel too dark. The shades in the hexagon tile will work well in pulling in the dark tone in vanity. Suggest painting walls for a softer, coordinated look.

I also like these tiles for the shower floor. They are definitely lighter in color but are a bit larger than the others
