Remodeling Design Dilemma Exterior

Hi folks,

We're planning to build a sizable addition onto the back of our home, and will also be replacing the siding and trim of our house. Right now we have a blah- beige vinyl siding, without much curb appeal. Any suggestions for livening up the exterior of our home? We are considering a fiber cement shingle siding (maybe navy?), wider white trim, and removing the shutters. What would you do?

To me, your siding looks just fine. If I had some $$ to allocate, I would totally do the landscaping. It could be much more interesting. I would also make the approach to the front door more significant and maybe put a little roof-let over the door. Is the door itself a bright color? If so, replace the storm door with a one-pane, full-height, glass, so the door pops more. Are the steps red? I think I'd paint them black.

Do you mostly enter the house through the door next to the garage? I would make that nicer, too, and I'd certainly want a little cover while I'm fumbling for my keys.

I would expand the steps and stoop to the right. Then I would add a patio. Your entry steps are too narrow. It will be difficult for paramedics to get someone out of your house if the person is on a gurney.

The second floor plan for the bonus room shows "pony walls" along the two sides with the rake roof, but we don't know the plate height of those walls. But it's this technique which allows the exterior elevations to be as they are shown, and much better appearance for the garage/bonus room exterior massing. As for the garage gables, the shed-type dormer allows for wider dormers (and more interior usable space) than a gable-type dormer. But if that shape is appealing, and a smaller interior space is workable, then go for it! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if it was my house I'd stick with the original elevations. The shutters on the large windows are inappropriate for the house. Shutters should fit the window and be able to close. The shutters on the small windows on the right side of the front door look fine, the ones on the large windows do not. It's up to you to paint the brick. I LOVE painted brick and would do it in a heartbeat. However, if you do, make sure you use the proper product. Romabio is a masonry paint great for this project.

The bush does need to be cut down, but, then you need to put something else there. What is that bush? Can it be trimmed down to half its size? If not, and you cut it down, then go to the Dollar store and buy the biggest flower plastic flower pot you can find (put drainage holes in the bottom), in a color that goes with the blue, and fill the pot with dirt, and either buy a bunch of brightly colored flowers, or even a fake flower arrangement, would look nice there, if it is well arranged, and quite full.
