House exterior help!

The exterior of our house needs help. Too much brick.. awkward window placement.. awkward shutters. What are some ideas on a fix? We’re struggling!

I would paint the brick a soft cream or white. Remove the shutters. Add planter boxes under windows. Paint siding darker color (maybe black?).

Please do not paint the brick but do remove the shutters. I would consult with a landscape designer on foundation planting such that there are taller shrubs where the land slants down (as on the left of the photo above) and lower as the land rises .If budget is a concern, have a design done and then implement it in stages.

If you need new paint, I would leave the brick unpainted, paint the siding a navy-ish color (like hale navy from BM), paint the door red, and remove the shutters. And then landscape. BUT - if the paint is fine yet and you simply want a color change, first do the landscape first. I think you'll be amazed at the change in curb appeal you'll get...

To me, your siding looks just fine. If I had some $$ to allocate, I would totally do the landscaping. It could be much more interesting. I would also make the approach to the front door more significant and maybe put a little roof-let over the door. Is the door itself a bright color? If so, replace the storm door with a one-pane, full-height, glass, so the door pops more. Are the steps red? I think I'd paint them black. Do you mostly enter the house through the door next to the garage? I would make that nicer, too, and I'd certainly want a little cover while I'm fumbling for my keys.

The bush does need to be cut down, but, then you need to put something else there. What is that bush? Can it be trimmed down to half its size? If not, and you cut it down, then go to the Dollar store and buy the biggest flower plastic flower pot you can find (put drainage holes in the bottom), in a color that goes with the blue, and fill the pot with dirt, and either buy a bunch of brightly colored flowers, or even a fake flower arrangement, would look nice there, if it is well arranged, and quite full.

At a lake home like that, driveway space is valuable. The home would look nicer if new concrete was poured, but boat storage space and parking space for friends and family are what matters for most people. The siding isn't the issue with the house, in my opinion. A portico is needed.

The shutters on the large windows are inappropriate for the house. Shutters should fit the window and be able to close. The shutters on the small windows on the right side of the front door look fine, the ones on the large windows do not. It's up to you to paint the brick. I LOVE painted brick and would do it in a heartbeat. However, if you do, make sure you use the proper product. Romabio is a masonry paint great for this project.

Definitely paint the brick! Remove the shutters and add taller landscaping.
