First Home! Exterior help?
Comments (14)The shutters need to go and not come back. They are much too small for the double windows. If you do remove the shutters you could do a larger trim around the windows. First and least expensive things to do are to paint the front door a color that draws attention to it and then redo the landscaping. Do you want to keep a railing? If the change in elevation from the door to the surrounding area is less than 30" then the railing is not required. If you want to keep it then I would either do a white or black railing. Long term I would add a small front porch as was suggested to add to the front facade. Using a large square wood column like on the carport would tie it to the existing facade. Comments (16)Sage green and cream. Power wash the brick. Fun color for front door to pull it out of the overhang. I’m partial to sage green for good reason. My front door is now teal and there is, finally, a brick border around the porch. But the color combination of sage green and cream is really very pretty and would suit your home nicely. You have a nice place. If you like Asian, I would explore that in the landscaping. If you have Netflix, there is a fabulous show called “Big Dreams, Small Spaces” hosted by Monty Don (a British gardener), and one of the episodes featured a woman who adored Asian gardens. She ended up creating the most amazing Asian-inspired back garden. I would be very hesitant to make the house Asian, but maybe your area would support that experiment, mine certainly would not....See MoreHome Exterior Help!
Comments (15)The bush does need to be cut down, but, then you need to put something else there. What is that bush? Can it be trimmed down to half its size? If not, and you cut it down, then go to the Dollar store and buy the biggest flower plastic flower pot you can find (put drainage holes in the bottom), in a color that goes with the blue, and fill the pot with dirt, and either buy a bunch of brightly colored flowers, or even a fake flower arrangement, would look nice there, if it is well arranged, and quite full....See MoreHouse exterior help needed
Comments (25)The massing of the house is low so the last thing you should do is make it appear to have sunk into the foundation. That unfortunate effect is increased by the roof eaves touching the tops of the windows. Try raising the eaves and ceilings and adding a taller "frieze" board (not masonry) between the eaves and window heads. Increase the roof overhang; align the roof eaves and use one strongly horizontal cladding material. The front "porch" looks more like a portico which should appear ancillary to the house so it should not be masonry. The portico supports will be an opprotunity to add some interest to the house. Avoid the sunken house effect of columns on masonry bases. A lot of the above examples offer good guidance....See Morerhondacharnc
