Help! ugly brown carpets... how to transform to mid century boho
Just moved into a new rental so there will not be any painting or carpet removing.. I really hate these brown carpets! Totally stumped on how to layout the living room (large rectangle) and where to start with decor. Don’t love the grey couch but not ready to invest in a new one but I am looking for accent chairs, tv stand and entry table to start! Also some rugs... not sure the one I have works.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoDivide the room into two spaces. Place the sofa on the wall facing the front door.
IKEA has solutions for an entertainment system on the inside wall where the floor mirror is now. Make sure you can swivel the t v, whether it be a table or wall mount. Now add the two chairs just about where the coffee table is now.
Use the far end of the room as a dining area. You will want a rug around 3’ larger than a table (all around), so you could find an inexpensive rug…let’s just say 8 x 10 for that area which will cover a good portion of the brown rug.Here is a boho look for dining area.

Off-white with a bright colored, mid century door was the direction I was leaning, so it sounds like I’m on the right track, @emmarene9, I think the small plants are boxwoods, but I am going to pull those out along with the stones and redo that bed with some more mid-century appropriate, Texas native landscaping - maybe grasses or succulents. Comments (30)Hi, the key consideration to work with is that the home is not MCM, but Ranch, and should be treated as such. Unless you want to engage an architect to change the roofline and windows, you should work within the Ranch style. I suggest you step back and reassess the design approach and consider "modern/updated ranch" vs MCM, in order to pull together a good overall design. With that in mind what needs to change first is the front door itself-it is out of sync with the house (color and style). Adapting the front entry to add a sunken patio is intriguing, and in line with Modern-Ranch approach. Minor comments: color, as that is not my strength, but if you're going to live in it vs sell then do what you like. I agree with the suggestions of the landscaping updates. For better or worse you have a huge tree too near the house that you'll have to deal with. The small one should be moved sooner than later as part of the overall plan. You have a huge front yard to work with but unless you're a gardener, I would suggest not doing too much beyond anchor plants and then add potted plants for pops of color-but those minor items alone will do wonders for the look....See Moremelle_sacto is hot and dry in CA Zone 9/

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoget a rug big enough that the front legs of your couch and chairs are on it. something with a simple design. your current rug is pretty but it's drawing the eye towards the carpet. so I recommend something monochromatic in a neutral color that's lighter than the carpet.
also note that layered rugs tend to creep and buckle like crazy, so you might want to opt for something fairly thick and/or stiff. having your furniture on the edges will help anchor it.
there are so many blues and greys in your furniture. I think that adding warm toned wood furniture will balance that out -- such as in your TV stand, side tables, or console behind the couch.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoin addition to what I said above -- honestly, I think the red/orange pillows need to go, and maybe the round ottoman. (what shade of blue is it? navy might be ok, but the way it looks in the photo, it seems like the wrong shade of blue for this room.)
for complimentary pops of color, think desaturated teal (light or dark) or navy. (are those big pillows navy or dark teal? either way, I like them.)
bring in some more gold accents too!
