I just want to make sure I understand your suggestion. Yes, although there is more detail than that. As in all things there are degrees of doing as well. Code, best practices for the area and absolute best can be pretty different. Retrofit on a slab on grade is easy to do absolute best. Dig your trench, line with geotextile fabric leaving enough fabric for the last step. Place your bed of drain rock such that the drain pipe will follow the actual foundation all around. So your trench will have to be deep enough and wide enough to accomplish all this. You probably can't make it too wide but there are material constraints and you want to leave some yard, eh? Fit your perforated pipe. Do not use the black, corrugated stuff, use the white perforated drain pipe. Before you glue, figure out where all this will drain to. Out the front, side or back? It has to go away, not just in a circle. Use sewer pipe if there is any chance of vehicle traffic running over it. Sock the perforated pipe. Lay, don't throw, drain rock over the pipe once all fittings have been glued up, do not dislodge or break the pipe. Wrap the geotextile fabric from step one over the drain rock/pipe install. Top the geotextile with pit run, then with a decorative mulch or a stone garden or anything but plantings. Place foundation beds/plantings out from the home, leave the area in which your drainage runs clear. As your plantings mature the void behind them goes away. Most people cram the foundation plantings way to close to the house anyway. OK, so there are technical terms for all this but I've tried to keep it simple, for me, lol. Kaib has it...think like a rain drop or in this case like ground water coming up and/or surface water percolating down. You want to make it easy for it to go somewhere else. Its all downhill from there. And, if I may say, a fun and satisfying project given slab foundation. I've done too many basement foundation walls and that entail a lot of digging....See MoreWhat do I use as a seal to make something waterproof?
Comments (9)Summer, what a cute table, chairs and setting. LOve the wall colors, the big red star and the wood tone of the railing with the rustic table and red chairs. Very neat! The first thing I thought of when you said your children eat off the table is how old is it? Could it have been painted with led paint? That would be my first concern. If it's latex paint then no worries. You said you like the rustic look of it and poly coating would take that look away permanently. I'd head to my nearest fabric source and get some very thick clear vinyl (sold on rolls at the end of most Wal Mart cutting tables) to use as a table cloth while the children are eating or you could premanently attach it by stapling it under the top. Either way makes for a very easy clean up without damaging the peeled paint look. Even stapled, if you ever want repurpose it, just remove the vinyl and you've got your perfectly old peeled paint table back....See MoreDo I need to seal grout in a birdbath?
Comments (2)there have been various questions about this and whether sealants actually poison the water for birds. in so far as needing it to make the piece water proof, thats not required since cementious products are naturally hydrophobic and grout is cementious. So no it won't rehydrate as long as it is properly cured before wetting. I hope that helps......See MoreToilet leaking at wax seal. What can I do until I can get it fixed?
Comments (8)Hi again. The leaking toilet is from the late 50's by Richmond. The two closet bolts that are missing are located at the rear of the toilet. Are there replacement bolts for a toilet this old? The other two bolts look original. I cannot understand why that plumber I hired six months ago didn't replace the missing bolts and didn't fix the movement in the toilet. Shouldn't he have addressed these issues when he was here, since I told him about them? When a plumber comes to fix the currently leaking wax seal, what if he finds that the wood structure underneath is wet or rotted? There could have been a small leak that I didn't know about. Is it the plumber's job to replace rotted wood, or does that require hiring a builder/carpenter? If the wood is only damp, then can the plumber go ahead and replace the wax seal and set the toilet that same day without waiting for the wood to dry? If there is damage/rot to the wood, how long does a repair like this usually take to fix? I only have one toilet in this house. Thank you for any help....See MoreHigh Tier God
