Getting a new puppy, so much to think about.
Comments (24)Socks - the best dog we ever had, was one that we took to a professional trainer and had private lessons with, for the whole family when the dog was just a puppy. It made all the difference in the world. The dog was a love anyway, but, what a pleasure to have a dog you could depend on to respond to voice commands. My daughter was able to locate a Vet near her, that comes outside to meet the dog and owner with masks on, social distancing, then brings the dog in for the exam and talks to the owner who is left outside, on the phone, then brings the dog back outside at the end. She likes that arrangement much better. Good point about finding out the name of an emergency vet. She does live fairly close to a large animal hospital, so there’s always that. My daughter made her decision on the dog and drove to Indiana on Sunday to pick the dog up. She had a friend who is in her careful covid circle that was able to go along and they have been sending photos and video. The dog is adorable of course. A tiny miniature dachshund, long haired in a cream color. It’s only going to be 10 lbs when mature. They will be home tonight. She already reports they had a great first night with the dog. They fed her, let her out twice, woke up at 3am to let her out again. Dog never wet the bed the whole night. So they are off to a good start. I don't have a photo yet that I can post, but I will soon....See MoreI bought new furniture but need help with all the accessories
Comments (46)Glass tops make me very nervous personally so I should stop suggesting them to people. Your rug choice is very pretty so a coffee table that doesn’t cover it up much might be nice. I think the black frames on your art might be nice to repeat. Generally I prefer individual mobile tables for guests’ drinks and such to a coffee table. They are more convenient Maybe these? Buy 2 sets but use only 3 pieces. They are inexpensive. Or gray. They also come in a tan....See MoreToo many dogs, not enough vets?
Comments (20)There is another trend that you may have noticed ...many community vet practices are being purchased by Banfield, VCA, etc. Yes! Very frustrating, as the vets retire and/or they hire new vets, there seems to be an increase in upsellng. DD2 worked at a vet office for four years. She said the interworkings of the business changed for the worst after the change of ownership. Sueb20, Ellie lost her left eye 9/2020 and her left eye 7/2021. We were lucky in Alabama living within 15 minutes of two veterinarian opthamologist at the specialty clinic. In Florida, I drove 90 minutes to see a specialist for check ups (weekly!) and it was 2 hours to his main office for the surgery. I fought hard to keep her remaining eye (4 to 5 RXs, total of 8 to 14 drops a day - dosage was changed several times between 2/2021 and the removal). She is adjusting well, as this house is small and we are mainly on the second floor during the day. She is even going up the 5 outside steps on her own after their potty breaks. In regards to your original question, our new vet in FL books 2 weeks in advance. If pet is sick, you bring and they work you in. *knock on wood* no emergency visits yet. The specialists her also books about 2 weeks in advance, but he worked us in weekly after he saw Ellie the first time. I never had issues getting her in to either vet in AL. If there was a wait, it usually only a day....See MoreGeez, now I had to say goodbye to Bud!!
Comments (98)Jasdip - yes, I have a very good memory and it isn't diminishing with age. It annoys many people until they need my memory! Now if only you could shovel our snow... No we no longer have our beloved dog. He dog passed at the age of 17 - in the middle of the pandemic. I will be forever grateful that our vet was open. But he was good until he wasn't so that is something and the average age is only 14 so living to be 17 is wonderful. I still look for him, talk to him, find things that belonged to him. I even miss the double coated white fur! We now have 2 senior kitties (one is white) - we got them a year after our Eskie died. We are too old to adopt another dog - heck we were told by one rescue that we were too old at 55 before we adopted our Eskie! What would they say now? And we have excellent references - 4 general vets, a vet in a specialized field, our groomer etc. but no, they are only interested in age, a fenced back yard (our dogs never went out unless attached to a regular leash) and personal references. In what universe is a vet lower than a personal reference who can say anything! But it is impossible that our pets outlive us - they all love me. Yes, adoption fees have gone up. I know that Petsmart has kitty adoption days. In Toronto (or so I was told) the kitties are brought in from the humane society, but outside of Toronto they are brought in by rescues and you are subject to their rules. And these days there are many rules. I dread the pandemic puppies that will soon be in the rescues. It has already started in the U.S. Our vet pre pandemic used to put kitties in a crate in the lobby and to a kitty they were all taken. We just lucked out - they are no longer taking in kitties but due to unusual circumstances (think awful) they did and were there for 6 months. Horrible, but now they are very well taken care of and our bosses! We adopted many of our dogs through our vet. We of course still go to her. Her idea of the mourning period is how long it takes her to find a pet who needs a home who would be a good fit. But she practices what she preaches and has a few of her own - both cats and dogs....See MoreNinapearl
