So amazing to snip all winter without much effort. Always getting ahead of myself and needing to fridge a bit of it. (tiny salad spinner I use for storage). Nothing like a fresh snip to the table. Cold and covered in snow...rain took care of the last storm but more snow on the way, 🙄

-I just read about covering some peas in the dark like the corn shoots. Trying that this weeks.

How much light do they need after they sprout? I keep seeing on line that I'll need a light, 16 hours a day or something and I didn't think that was right.

@sleevendog - blanched peas sound really good. It is great fun to watch things grow in the winter. I have my first tiny attempt at amaranth going. Germination is fine. I do hear they are susceptible to mold though.

@annie - I have grown them in a sunny window as well as under lights. They grow faster under lights. They stretch without lights but some stretching is ok because it makes harvesting much easier. If you try growing them you will feel like you are doing everything wrong at first.

I am not too scientific - the lights go on when I come downstairs and go off when I think of it. Last year I bought a dozen ridiculously cheap LEDs on Amazon.

These LED lights are affordable, easy to install, extremely bright. There are many wattages to select from.

I've been growing micro/maco greens for 20 yrs. 24/7 365 days for a reason. The beach house is in the middle of nowhere on an island. Small fishing village. Fight for a simple banana with a price sticker, on each individually, a head or two of iceberg, at the hardware/food/fuel stop...no herbs but dried. I can grow all I need in a sunny window or under a small 20 buck LED strip. 7-10 days salad. One winter I grew basil, cilantro, celery leaves, Thai basil !, and made holiday spring rolls for a crowd.

4 hour round trip to a better grocery. 6 hour round trip to the 'city' where they have a Costco. ...call it 8-10 hours if you include the shopping time.

All my micro greens and micro/dwarf tomatoes are all about retirement on the island. Winter grows for food value. Two easy steps to a quick salad harvest. All winter/all summer.

agmiss15, where did you find your plant stand? I have thought I would like one like that, only smaller, for growing violets.

I keep meaning to build a smaller one myself. This thing is big. The shelves are 2’x4’. My woodworking skills are limited but this is pretty simple structurally. And comes apart easily if awkwardly.

A friend and neighbor who is a fine woodworker built this for himself years ago. He was very excited to dig this out of storage to semi-permanently loan/give it to me. I try to make sure to share seedlings with him every year.

I was afraid you were going to tell me it was hand crafted. It does look like a nice setup and even better that it was a loan/gift!
