Our apartment in Singapore used a small 15 litre electric HW tank on a timer switch. This is a relatively common arrangement in the Lion City. Just push a button 20 minutes before needing hot water, and I was good-to-go. The timer ran only for an hour at a time. I'd have to push the button again if I wanted more. In a tropical climate, that was rarely necessary. We would sometimes go a couple of days between heating the tank. Other times, I'd forget to hit the timer until it was too late. It was warm water for my shower or the dishes at this point. I'd shut it off right after I was done, as there was no need for the heater to finish it's cycle. The hot (or sometimes warm) water fed the the shower, kitchen sink, and bathroom sink. I showered, washed dishes, and drank without ever getting sick from it. As-far-as-I-know, no-one has gotten Legionnaire's Disease from using luke-warm water in Singapore. I just wish more Asian countries would use S-traps for sinks and showers. P-traps are common in Singapore. No traps are common in Indonesia. Yuck. I guess that's a discussion for another thread. Peace. Marco

Our previous home had original radiators in every room except the living room in which another PO had installed baseboard radiators. I have no idea why since, to get the same heat output as a stand-up radiator, you need lots and lots of lineal feet of baseboard radiator. Anyway, for the most part we just ignored them and put furniture where we wanted. You can see in the picture (please ignore how bland the room is!). We painted them to match the walls (they were originally maroon and the walls were muddy mauve, but that's another story!) The bookcases and TV stand are right up against the heaters. We did have furniture on feet so they weren't completely blocked. And the sofa is pulled about a foot away from the windows and that run of the heater. Hot water baseboards don't get hot enough to be a fire hazard, but electric ones do. Never put anything directly up against an electric baseboard heater.

Hi. I am assuming that you have a boiler, not just a domestic water heater. I would definitely separate the upstairs from the downstairs. One main reason is the upstairs usually gets more sun and requires less heat than the downstairs. If you have the option, why not zone the upstairs bedrooms separately? It sounds like the baseboard on your added bedroom upstairs was installed at the end of the hydronic zone loop. If the piping was undersized, or the pump not large enough, and the other radiators were on, there may not be much heat left in the piping to support another baseboard or cast iron radiator. One way to check is to turn off the flow to the cast iron radiators (usually via a gate valve on the radiator supply or return piping) and see if the other baseboard gets hot. If it does not, it may be air locked and need to be purged. It it does get hot, consider isolating the room as another zone. The current piping is insufficient to provide the needed btu's to the baseboard. Also, on your boiler you should be running at around 180 degrees if possible (assuming it is not steam). If you had a slab system, you would not want to exceed 140 degrees. You might want to have a service man come and check the temperature split between the supply and return lines at the boiler. You may also have a balancing issue, depending on how the header was piped.
