Kitchen/Dining Wall removed... what to do with floor?

We just took down the KIT/DR wall to make a large open space that could include a KIT island. We like the new space but can't decide on what to do about the flooring.

Plan 1) was to remove the existing DR floor and install new floor in both DR and KIT. But it will not match the adjacent LIV floor which appears to be BRUCE AO Oak Copper Dark Hardwood Flooring.

We ordered a sample and side by side, compared to the old faded flooring, the new wood appears a little more red when hit by the sun (photos below taken a few minutes ago, at night).

Question,

1) do we just live with that subtle difference and continue the floor in the same pattern?

2) do we lay the DR & KIT perpendicular to the old LIV floor?

3) do we just tile the KIT and leave the faded LIV & DR as is?

4) do we just lay new flooring in the KIT with a wood transition piece between the KIT and DR?

And expertise would be appreciated :)

Last note. DR floor is more discoloured/faded (sun) than LIV floor.

This is a normal variation when old wood has been exposed to sunlight and the new is 'fresh' out of the box. Go ahead and put this in (can it be laced in??). It is so close that it will even out inside of a year or two.

yes, remove the threshold molding piece, and lace in the new w/the old. if some of the older pieces can be removed, put the newer ones in that place and the older ones w/some of the newer ones.

(Unless, can the older floor be refinished? prob not) in any case, once the island is done it should look ok to the eye. you could always throw down a runner.

the other option would be to use a slate or porcelain tile floor in the kitchen area

I would definitely remove the wall. It makes such a wonderful open room, and lets light into the front as well. Any "confusion" about eating areas can be resolved by thoughtful arrangement/coordination of furniture. I'm not sure about the frosted glass panel above but I could see a frosted glass slider of some sort if you think you might want to close off the room in some way. Also, I think the play area could be integrated into the kitchen. Our DD has hers that way and it works really well. You have a lovely home. All the best luck with your plans.

I would. It will make the install much easier and also make it possible to keep the floor in a future renovation that changes or moves the island. Probably just a few screws holding it in place, should be easy to move. I've saved my self a lot of headaches several times now by installing kitchen flooring before the cabinets go in over the entire floor and then setting cabinets on top of it. Gives you the freedom to move things around later for the price of a few square feet of flooring while making the flooring installation easy -- a win-win.

yes, it is a fridge freezer. the larder stores al the food cans, pasta, cereals, milk, water, etc. Is this sketch close to what you describing before? (no coffe station needed since none of the adults drink coffe. However, microwave could be located in there -currently in the kitchen but in the rear wall next to the window not shown in he pictures) I already thought about this arrangement. I like the idea of moving the TV to the opposite wall. However, the wall is plasterboard and there are no electric sockets in there (but it is not impossible to bring electrical cable in there - I do not need TV antena cable). The challenge is to find the extra furniture next to the fridge freezer, since I cannot find anything that can match. Also ideally that storage should go towards the ceiling since I need slightly more storage space. Also bear in mind that the lower skirting board by the fridge finishes like this: Fyi, in the past I had a rectangular table and I played around with the different arrangements, but I still thing there is lot of room for improvement, mainly aesthetically wise.

It’s not such a huge difference. I’d lace the rooms together. And match as best as possible. This flooring is sooo pretty love it

SO KEEP the DR floor even though it's faded and lace in the new floor where the old kitchen starts?

Never thought of that because of the new/old contrast... but that'd certainly save costs and I don't mind the aged floors.

Yes. They’ll blend somewhat before you know it. And if you can sand and restain sometime down the line that would be awesome
