Need Help Updating 80's Oak Kitchen
Comments (19)My kitchen has similar colors only my countertops are BRIGHT blue! I am going with Uba Tuba granite for countertops, while keeping my oak cabinets. I know they aren't stylish any more, but I still like them & like yours they are solid & custom made. The uba tuba is a lower priced granite & looks stunning with oak! I am adding dentil & crown moulding to the tops of the cabninets for a more finished look which is quite reasonably priced. I will have stainless appliances so the polished brass pulls are going in favor of brushed nickel. I see that you have exposed hinges as well, but cannot tell the color. Mine are exposed too, but didn't hold the polish as the pulls did, so the brushed nickel looks fine with them. It seems to have a bit of a gold sheen to it. If new countertops are not in your budget right now a friend of mine found a paint by Rustoleum that you can use to paint countertops. She had to tell me she painted her countertops - I would have never guessed! So that may be an option to look into. Lastly, your cabinets over your penninsula - I don't have those now, but did in my old house. I really didn't care for them, but they were necessary for storage. So, I think if you could give them up that might be something to consider. If not, I have seen glass doors put in on both sides which lets the light shine through to the kitchen and also updates the look. Best of luck! I've been working on my remodel ideas for months. New appliances arrive next week & the whole process begins. I think I may take sledge hammer to the bright blue laminate as soon as I hear the granite is on its way!...See More80's coastal home needs exterior HELP!
Comments (15)I would use SW Spalding Gray or a lighter color down. It depends on your neighborhood. My neighborhood has very similar home styles of the same year and is lately going lighter. In the last few months some have even gone an off white. They all look very fresh and clean. Anyway, this chit should work whether you choose one of the lighter shades or darker. Chit samples below do not really look like the color "on" but here it is. They change greatly according to the time of day and go from a warm taupe to taupe beige-y to a warm mottled vintage gray. The Heron Plume is much much lighter in real life and would be a great trim color. This color for the door. Don't be afraid to go a bit brighter than you normally would as that area is in shadow. This door painted the periwinkle above. Could you please post a closeup of the window area in front? And, also a sample of what your new roof color will be?...See MoreNeed help/input for updating honey oak country kitchen!
Comments (14)Jhmarie; yes, the kitchen is very functional, and a part of this is almost like therapeutic processing for what to do with this house!Thank you for the heads up about the book. I will have a look for that. Aprilneverends; well thank you. I am really trying to not get caught up in fads, but I think the state of the place made me focus on the yellowness of the oak. And the oakiness of the oak everywhere in that part of the house! I always really enjoyed this blue, to be honest. ha!! It contrasted nicely and I got to cackle in my husband's direction every time someone told me they loved it, too. That's the thing I guess, you never can tell. I am a bit leery of how much the kitchen will change with all of the white and off white in regards to the contrast, and had to kind of giggle at the thought of painting the walls white and the wainscoting blue. Like a role reversal. :D Fidlfreek; I appreciate you bringing me back down from the clouds with some of your suggestions. Some of your sentiments I had thought of and was considering - all white miracle method, subway tile, lighting updates. Now is the time to pull that big beast down I think - we are planning to paint the ceilings throughout the home. Curious of your thought process- the lighting fixture you linked from ikea, is that to coordinate with the current colored cabinets? Or the shape in general? Staining the cabinets darker is of course an option, I just don't want this area to feel any more boxed in, I guess. This vantage point is actually the only way in and out of the kitchen - there is also peninsula seating already to the left, FYI. I actually picked the flooring you circled in the event that I wanted to go lighter or darker with the cabinets, now or later, that there would be flexibility in the flooring color to do so. It's also more of the classic wood look than some of the on trend colors I am seeing out there. The more I think about it, the more I would like to NOT spend a lot of time painting everything white, but I definitely think I need some adjustments in here. I find it interesting that none of you have mentioned the appliances or their color - apart from the microwave, which is usually the least of the appliance worries. ;D I so appreciate your feedback and input....See More80s House Update- Help needed! :)
Comments (33)I have a "garage forward" house, and perhaps what you don't like is the strong statement the stone makes but only halfway. So it's a pretty big contrast between the stone and the other side of the garage which makes a strong out of balance statement. I'd paint the house a color closer to the stone so there's much less contrast. Painted stone is like putting tinfoil on a turd, IMHO. You could also cover the stone with siding that matches the pillar or some other siding on the house. The problem with your house now is that the garage is looking way too prominent considering how pedestrian that part is, with the entrance receding into the background. That can be fixed with paint and landscaping. But if you have your heart set on a white house . . . I dunno, maybe cover the stone with stucco. I just think painted white stone is going to look cheap. Colorful front door will be a nice update too....See MoreHU-778522450
