Help decorating around a large wall-mounted television

I have a fairly funky family room; it adjoins the kitchen via a small bar and is fairly long. We know where we want the TV and have mounted it—we've chosen to go with a large tv (85"; 75" wide) because the couch is roughly 15' away at its furthest point.

Now, my question. With an 85" TV I need a huge media console. The problem is, if we get a huge media console it will eat into the bar area and make the stool less usable. What should I do here?

Forget the chairs…they are not bar or counter height. Your goal is to have this quite large t v on the wall. You need to remove the obstacle (the counter) and design around the t v.

Assuming you have seating opposite, this would be a good inspiration for the space.

I think I’d keep it as clean, open, and streamlined as possible there, so would do a floating shelf/shelves under the TV ... or one of those wall-mounted TV units that has a back and shelves. I’ve seen some that are pretty narrow and wouldn’t stick out into the room too much. Search ‘floating entertainment units’ for lots of ideas.

For the bar, I’d get backless stools that would fit completely under when not in use.

yeah, I like the first and last best -- something about the asymmetry is appealing. not sure how possible that is with a ginormous TV, but the pieces seem flexible.

I read your post and looked at your pictures. My thought was: "What a comfortable home - I could move right in!" So what really bugs you about it? I agree with removing the clock. You could mount the tv on the wall, (hiding the cords?) but is it really worth it? Same with bar stools. I would use them, but if you're sure you never would, why buy them? If you decide to get 2 anyway, choose a style that fits neatly under the island overhang - perhaps a "saddle" style? Wall art? Your wonderful windows are wall art! And... you have a lovely glass case for displaying art objects that you can change out on your whim. Golden oak furniture. I live in a house filled with golden oak furniture my parents accumulated during the 1980's. And golden oak kitchen cabinets they chose when they built a house in 1991. It wasn't until I started reading Gardenweb forums in 2010, I learned that golden oak was "out" and "orange-y". Up till then, I simply thought of all these pieces as "wood". And wood that went well with other (inherited) pieces in the house that date back to the 1920's- 1940's. Trendy or not - it works in MY house. If you truly dislike golden oak, why not sell it and buy what you would like used? Might be more cost effective than buying paint, or hiring someone to professionally paint your furniture. Especially if you might not be pleased with the finished results. Again, I suggest you ask yourself...what REALLY bugs you about your home?

Just checked out crown and ceiling molding. Think crown is about as big as it should be. Really like ceiling molding if they were higher. Thought what about a shade darker in paint? I did dove wing but pale oak May show some definition?

Okay I went ahead and hung sheers that I had purchased for another room. I know they are too long but I don't want to hem them if they don't look right for this room. If this looks fine I will order another pair. The large window has two panels on the one side. Once the end tables get here I think it will look so much better. I have decide on a plant to go beside the tv on one side. I will go to Home Depot tomorrow to find one I like. Now to decide what goes on the other side.

Appreciate the ideas! A couple thoughts: we are not going to make any structural changes (ie. removing the bar). The chairs are not keepers and do fit under the bar for what it's worth.

I definitely like the idea of something more streamlined and open vs. leaning into a more formal and structured built-in style. Also worth noting that we do not have any sort of media units (DVD players, etc.) as they are all integrated into either the TV or hidden.

It would be helpful to post more photos at different angles. ;) A side view to show how much room between the bar chair and wall. A wide angles view to show the whole room going both ways, etc.

IMO the stools are not the right height and who wants to sit there when someone is watching TV I would forget the stool idea and get a streamlined cabinet or shelf under the TV in fact if you plan a kitchen reno lose the overhang completely since it is out of the kitchen space anyway. I too would love to see the whole space since this eems like a poor spot for the TV
