Edith Cavell memorial.

Edith was born in a nearby village and grew up to became a nurse, then matron, before being recruited to work in Brussels.

In 1914, she began sheltering British and French soldiers, and French civilians, before funnelling them out of occupied Belgium into neutral Netherlands.

She was arrested on 3 August 1915 and charged with harbouring Allied soldiers, and her execution by firing squad was carried out in the October.

There was international condemnation over her death, and she became the most prominent British female casualty of WWI.

The King granted an honorary permission that her body could be moved and reburied in the grounds of Norwich Cathedral.

maddiemo, I have driven by Edith Cavell Mountain in Alberta many times. I must confess I never knew who she was. I’ve learned something today. :)

eta OMG It is believed that the world's largest glacial erratic, called Big Rock, located near Okotoks, Alberta, was once part of Mount Edith Cavell.

I used to play on the Okotoks Big Rock as a child! We’d go for Sunday drives from Calgary.
