What to do about the crown molding and wainscoting?

Hello! I’m in the process of updating a basement toy room into an office. the ceiling is only 6.8 ft tall But the room has crown molding and full walls of wainscoting. It makes the room feel incredibly squat. I pulled out a corner of the crown molding and it did help the ceiling look higher. I also pulled up a piece of the picture frame molding and saw that the squares are actually tongue and groove beadboard that have been skim coated. I can not remove the beadboard because it looks like the walls on the other side are anchored to it and I don’t think I’m ready to tackle that big of a project. What can I do to update the look of the room. The picture frame molding in some spots is really bad. Like maybe the beadboard behind it is protruding or something. the previous owners did not disclose that there was water in the basement but from the looks of some of the wood there may have been a big water problem.
